Is there a huge difference?

I was thinking about getting the p4 2.8ghz which is about $235(canadian). But then i thought if i should spend another $50 for a 3.0ghz. Is there a huge difference with getting 200mhz more?

a huge difference? No. ~7% for CPU intensive tasks, and less for everything else.

What's the system for, and what other parts are you getting? You could spend the extra $50 getting a better graphics card for better gaming performance, or possibly on some slightly faster RAM & Overclock the 2.8C to >3Ghz anyway...

So, whats the rest of the system look like.

This is what im thinking of getting:
CPU:Intel P4-2.8E S478 (1M) 800mhz
MB:VIA PT880 P4 S478 800FSB(HT) Dual DDR400 5PCI Dual-SATA-RAID AGP8x LAN Audio
RAM:Corsar DDR400/512M: PC3200 DDR400 512MB(two of these)
Videocard:Nvidia FX5700U or ATI Radeon 9600XT

This'll be a very general computer, nothing very specific. Im gonna use it for when playing games like Doom 3 and Half life 2. And also be doing a lot of 3d stuff in 3dsmax and using NLA programs like Adobe Premiere and Combustion. I also have a budget to follow so i cant just get anything i want.

What do you guys think?

Ok the RAM is good stuff you can keep that altough as mentionned you could get some PC3500/3700 even 4000 with a lower CPU 2.6ghz an overclock it its not dificult.(look my sig)
Motherboard I advice against VIA chipset altoguh not bad I strongly recommand getting a Intel CHipset i865. YOu could get either a ABIT or ASUS based on the 865 chipset both have really good boards.

For Cpu I beleive you should go with a 2.8C, it will run slightly faster and much cooler. SO you could get a 2.8C with PC3500 and run it at 3.0ghz and all that cooler than the 2.8e

For vid card go with the 9600XT better Directx9 support it will help in the long run.

Just thought I'd say I agree with labbbby,
Abit IS7 is about the most highly-recommended motherboard for Intel Systems. The P4C (Northwood) cores are indeed slightly faster for most things, and run significantly cooler than the P4E (Prescott) core chips. Don't be fooled by the 2.8E having twice the cache - In this instance it doesn't do <i>quite</i> enough to help.

9600XT would be better than 5700... But see if you can stretch to a 9800Pro. Seeing as you want to play games, I'd <i>definitely</i> put the $50 towards a 9800Pro over a 9600XT (but make sure you get one with 256-bit memory)

I have to agree with everyone. Ditch Scotty. Get a Woody. Via con Intel i865, no Via. (How's that for one whole year of Spanish class eons ago?) Aim for Radeon 9800 Pro, even if it means a little less CPU speed. And might I ask, why not AMD?

Hey guys, thanks for all your help.
Alright, i think i'll take your guys word with getting the P4 2.8C instead of the 2.8E.
But the RAM im not sure if i should change. I could rather get the 3200 which i showed u guys before. Or Corsair TwinX512-3700 PC3700 DDR 2 x 256M for dual channel or overclocking - $195(can) Would this be faster with just 2 x 256mb? Or keep wat im getting which is 1gb of 3200, which'll only cost me $256?
The reason why i chose the VIA PT880 mobo is because i read something on this site, said it was better then the i865. http://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030929/index.html
I was about to get a ASUS i865, but then i read that and i thought that was better and a lot cheaper.
For the videocard i wont be able to get the 9800Pro, because it'll cost me another $100 or so more. And also the reason why i want to get a Nvidia FX5700U. Is because i also read here that the nvidia is a lot better in opengl then ati cards. 3dsmax is run in opengl and i really want to make sure that its running smoothly. I dont really care about having a fast videocard, i just want to be able to play games like doom3/hl2 well. But have a really fast cpu/ram and all that.
But, if there's someone quite familiar with 3ds max here, can you tell me what you need to make it run very fast? Like when working in the viewports? and when your rendering? Do you need a faster CPU/RAM/videocard?

If you're going to copy me, at least get some ram that will allow you to clock up. You WILL want to do that! A 2.8C is not fast enough in stock form!
