Is there a way to use a pc fan by itself?

This is purely out of curiosity. I have two fans laying around, both from a pretty old pc. One is a cpu fan, and the other is a normal case fan. Is there a way to make them operate standalone? If not, can I just plug one into my new pc? They both have a 3 socket mobo connector, if that matters. Thanks in advance!

Just grab a 12v DC power adapter, wire tape the wires together, boom done.
