I'm new to computers and building my first one, and I'm super excited because it has been a great experience for me.

Currently I have Windows 7 Home Premium, which if I could do, I would save a few bucks and put it towards a better graphics card.

And if I can't (which I will not be surprised) do you think I can get a student discount on Windows 10? I'm going to be a junior in high school.

Thank you so much!

Technically the answer is no. The Win 7 you had installed and in use on your old computer is licensed for use on ONE machine only.

You MIGHT try this: ask Microsoft Tech Support if you can UN-INSTALL your Win 7 from your old machine so it is is no longer linked to that unit. THEN can you Install it in your new machine? If you can do this, it is still only in use on ONE machine as the license requires.
If you have a valid Win7 install already, you can upgrade for free to win10. You have just less than a year to decide. Personally, I would stay with Win7. I tried out the beta Win10 and it sucked. Win10 calls home with everything you do, type and etc. All your data and info will be on Microsoft's cloud. A total violation of privacy. When win7 goes the way of XP, I think I will switch to Linux. It's free and a decent OS.

My new pc doesn't have any OS installed on it, that's why i asked if I can use my current computer's OS for my new build and take advantage of the Windows 10 upgrade

Never thought of that, great idea, I'll try it tomorrow.

I have always been able to transfer windows to another build. If it will not activate on-line normally, there is an option to call an 800 number, talk to a microsoft recording and follow the instructions and enter the correct responses and your system will be activated. Right click on "computer" and select "properties" and then the option that is at the bottom of the window. Follow the instructions.
