Question Is this a GPU or monitor issue? (Video included)

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a strange issue with my system, and I’d appreciate your input. Here's what happens:

1. The screen **freezes** for a 5 to 10 seconds, but the audio from any video or program continues playing normally.
2. After the freeze, the screen goes **black** with **green lines** appearing briefly.

I’m wondering if this is a problem with my **GPU** (MSI GTX 1080) or if it could be related to my **monitor**.

Has anyone encountered something similar? Any advice or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated!

Motherboard: MSI X99A GODLIKE GAMING (MS-7883)

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:

OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

To rule out your monitor, hook it up to another display source/system and see if the issue persists. To rule out your GPU, If you have an iGPU, you can remove your discrete GPU and see if the issue persists.

You might want to use DDU to remove all GPU drivers*intel, AMD and Nvidia) in Safe Mode, then manually install the latest GPU driver sourced from Nvidia's support site in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

Thank you for your reply! I've added the technical specifications of my PC to the post. Could you please take a look and let me know if there's anything that stands out or if you have further advice? I really appreciate your help!

I downloaded DDU and uninstalled the drivers, then reinstalled them the way you suggested. Now, instead of showing the green lines, the screen just stays black for over 5 seconds. I’m not sure if this is better or worse. Any ideas?

Also, I’ve noticed that this problem only happens when I’m watching videos on YouTube. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Update ur GPU's VBIOS firmware, what is ur exact M S I card that you have?

The only way is to test monitor on another device and vice versa

According to CPU-Z I have the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 MSI GP 104-400

I don’t think it’s the monitor because when the screen goes black, sometimes (not always), the play and pause controls of the video stop working. If the monitor were the issue, I assume the video controls would still function normally.

I had the Task Manager open when the freeze occurred. In the screenshot, you can see where it starts and where it ends. What do you think? Is the graphics card actually defective?

The strange thing is that this only happens when I’m watching videos on YouTube. For example, when I run FurMark for a long time, where the GPU is at 100% usage and reaches 80 degrees Celsius, it doesn’t happen. I honestly don’t know what to think. I’ll try connecting the monitor to another computer with the same cable to make sure 100% that it’s not the monitor.
