I'm relatively new to overclocking but this is by far the overclock I'm the most pleased about. I bought the 4690k so that I could overclock and now I'm finally relatively pleased about my overclock, but, I'm not sure if it's really as good as I think it is.

Idle temps and voltages, and other settings are:

and this is after 30 minutes Prime 95 (Small FFTs):

TLDR: Are the temps ok? Should I increase or lower anything?

Specs:
Gtx 970 G1 Gaming
Rm750 Psu
I5 4690K
Msi z97a gaming 6
Nepton 280L (Noctua NF-A14 FLX x2)
Hyperx Fury Red DDR3 1600MHz 16GB

Yes static mode. Same as fixed. Usually to get into bios you just mash del key or f2 as soon as you hit the power on button. I don't know your motherboard well enough to help you with that part but I'm sure there are YouTube videos that'll help. Once you get into it, and find the oc settings you'll see where you can adjust uncore and MANY other setting. Basically we want voltage at 1.285, CPU ratio at 46, and voltage at static or fixed whatever its called in your bios, also leave EVERYTHING else in there at default. Try and get that going if you get lost let me know ill see if I can dig up something to help you in that bios.

Gotcha, the thing is, my keyboard doesn't turn on in time for me to get into the BIOS but I'll see what i can do

That's strange. Is there a bios button of any sort on the motherboard? Also try plugging your keyboard into a USB 2.0 port on your board. Some motherboards will disable USB 3.0 ports to help it post faster

OK, I'm in the BIOS and I don't understand anything. Is "Ring Frequency the same as Uncore Ratio?

And "cpu ratio mode" should I leave this on "Dynamic mode" or put it to "fixed mode"

OK, the multiplier is set to 46, the voltages are set to 1,285 and the ratio mode is set to fixed. Startup and run IBT now?

Ok sounds good dude. Run that ibt and let me know how it goes. Should be ok. Keep an eye in voltages but if you set it to fixed and entered 1.285 it should not move from 1.285v. Goodluck and report back with results!

I fucking did it, nay, WE fucking did it, the temperatures were kinda all over the place, maxing at 87 degrees again, but it succesfully ran it.

Thank you so so much, I really appreaciate it, if you ever need anything let me know.

accidentaly made that previous comment of yours the top answer haha.

haha no problem man. glad it finally passed. now since you didn't do a long term stress test just so you know, if your pc does randomly crash or do something funny in the future it may be because no long term stressing was done, but I feel ibt is a pretty good test and you should be 100% stable. play some games see how your temps are but I think you're golden now. enjoy your freshly overclocked cpu!

Hey, the temps were really good actually 😀 I played some Witcher III and the cpu maxed at about 60-65 degrees.

But do you happen to know how to make Intel speedstep work? It worked fine yesterday but today it just won't work and I'm running at a constant 4.6GHz making my temps average around 50 degrees at idle which is way to hot for my comfort.

That's great. Temps are perfect. Idle is a little high and there's a reason. With the static voltage and ratio set it never moves which keeps you overclocked at 4.6 24/7. You have 2 options. We can go through the process of setting up your voltage with a offset, that should drop your CPU down when you aren't stressing it, or you can setup a custom fan curve to keep the CPU a little cooler on idle. My 5930k is at 4.5ghz with a fixed voltage 24/7 and it idles around 32-38c depending on room temp which is perfect. My 5930k is a hot chip with more voltage then your cpu. 50c is far too high. There must be something going on with your fan curve

This is my fan curve;
http://gyazo.com/e6fed199f990d243a51b0584fc752a4c
(All case fans have the same curve)
I'm not interested in having a super noisy system but I'm willing to raise it maybe a little as the 3 case fan produce barely any sound at all, but the two 140mm Noctua fans, (Cpu fan #2) do make some noise at very fast rpm.

But I'm also willing to go through setting up an offset voltage.

I raised the fan RPM and the case fans are ok, I can barely hear them but the cpu fans start annoying me at about 1000RPM which is what I have to run them at to drop the temps even a little bit.

TLDR
>1000RPM Good sound level but still around 50 degrees at idle.
1000RPM< Lower temps but annoying sound levels

Sounds good, appreciate it. And btw, I'm playing GTA V on ultra and it's only 44° makes no sense to me but I guess I can't complain. Still 45-50° at idle though

Hey, I don't mean to nag, but, my cpu started downclocking a little bit, it went down to 4.1GHz, still not as low as I want it to be though, it used to be as low as 0.7GHz at idle before I overclocked.

Temps are better now for some reason, I think it's because I set my voltage to Adaptive mode, my voltages drop as low as 0.985v at idle, but the clockspeed doesn't go lower than 4.1GHz<
Temps while gaming GTA V is around 50 degrees and idle is now around 38 degrees.

Hey, yeah It's at 4.6 when I'm gaming yes, and around 4.1 - 4.2 at idle. It has started dipping down to 3.5GHz and therefore the temps go all the way down to 28c at idle and such, my cpu has a mind of its own

According to IXTU the average temps at idle is 32c, and while gaming around 51c-52c if I remember correctly.

I can live with my cpu being at around that speed since it stays so cool, even though it would be preferable if it went lower than 3.5GHz. Thanks anyway! 😀
