Is this dangerous?

Hello,

im trying to fit a 2 pin fan connector onto a 3 pin motherboard connection. the problem is, is that the 2 pin fan connector doesnt fit because of two plastic tabs which are too small to align properly with the 3 pin sysfan connection on the mobo. would shaving these plastic allignment tabs down, on the 2 pin fan connector be harmful?

Depends if you can ID the wires polarity and that of the mobo pins, I shouldn't think its an issue, but I wouldn't plug them in without knowing what they are,

Hey moto! Thanks for the quick response. So basically each of my 3 fans have two sets of wires, one set with black and yellow, and the other with black and red. the black and red leads of to a 2 pin connector, and the black and yellow to a 2 pin male molex connector. Basically the reason I need to do this is because right now, I had to borrow an antec 6pin to molex from a friend, and try to see if it would work on my ocz psu. I have everything plugged in, but my case fans are the only things that dont start. I'm running an ocz 700w modxstream pro inside a cm storm scout, and just added a second gtx 460. I really appreciate any and all help, thanks!

And let me clarify I borrowed the antec 6pin cable, for all my case fan connections

Instead of 'shaving' the tabs I would suggest getting a 3 pin fan connector and soldering the two wires from your fan. However what you need to know is that the first 2 pins are your power connectors (these are the ones you need to connect to) positive and negative (obviously reversing the polarity will only reverse the direction of the fan it will still work either way round) the third pin is for the tacho, without it you will not be able to monitor the fans speed but it is not dangerous to connect without it. The only danger in what you propose is overdrawing power on the fan header and slightly overloading your motherboard (peak will occur at startup) so check that the current rating on your fan is within the specifications for the mobos header (should be fine as its only really an issue when running multiple big fans off one header).

Ok Technically there is also the danger of burning out the fan by sending it too much power, but I will assume that you have a 12V fan and as such this is not a possibility.

Ensure that your connections are to pins 1 and 2 and that the direction of rotation is what you require and should all be fine.

What is this fan for? I have assumed it is a simple case fan.
