Hey guys, I recently purchased this HP Omen 30L from Amazon. The system specs are as follows:

i9-10850K
32GB HyperX 3200 Mhz
1TB SSD - WDC
2TB HDD - Seagate Tech
RTX 3080
Wifi 6

I just watched a YT video and the guy said you can't upgrade the memory because it's stuck on 2400Mhz and you can't make any changes in the BIOS. Also he said the timing is Slooooowwww. HP Omen 30L - Memory Upgrade - Impossible! - YouTube

How do I post screenshots I saved on my desktop? Let me know if this memory stinks, cause i'm still in my Amazon window to return it. Until I can upload my CPU-Z screenshots here's the info it shows.

Memory Tab: Type DDR4, Channel Dual, DRAM Freq 1596.2 Mhz, FSB RAM 1.24, CAS# Latency (CL) 22.0 Clocks, RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD) 22 clks, RAS# Precharge (tRP) 22 clks, Cycle Time (tRAS) 52 clks, Row Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC)560 clks, Command Rate (CR) ZT

SPD Tab Slot 1 and 3: Bandwidth DDR4-3200 (1600 Mhz), Module Mfg Kingston, DRAM Mfg SK Hynix, Part Number HP32D4U8D8HC-16X, Module Size 16GB, SPD Ext XMP 2.0, Week/Year 41/20, Ranks Dual

Timings Table: JEDEC#13 Freq 1600Mhz, CAS Lat 22.0, RAS# to CAS# 22, RAS# Precharge 22, tRAS 52, tRC 74
Timings Table: JEDEC#14 Only differences are CAS Lat 23
Timings Table: JEDEC#15 Only differences are CAS Lat 24
Timing Tables: XMP-3200 Freq 1600Mhz, CAS Lat 18.0, RAS# to CAS# 21, RAS# Precharge 21, tRAS 39, tRC 74

Thoughts, I bought this prebuild rig for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and I can play the game in 4K Ultra at 30FPS. I was able to get those FPS in NYC at night. If I attempt to go to 60FPS the game starts to stutter and get a little choppy.

Timings that CPU-Z shows? It doesn't show what your RAM is capable of -it only shows motherboard (BIOS) settings.
You didn't specify what exact RAM module you have, but if it's this one:
HyperX Fury
-then you can see what RAM is capable of.
And if you can't set timings as in RAM specs, then it's motherboard limitation.
I can look inside the tempered glass window and that looks like my RAM. It's been confirmed that the BIOS has been locked by HP so the only way is to use Intel XTU because the Omen Gaming Hub which provides overclocking features only allows you to make changes to the CPU. There are no options for the memory so unless I use Intel XTU then i'm stuck with the default RAM timings. And if I decided to buy different RAM sticks, it will default to its stock speeds i.e. 2400Mhz.

Here's a thread that was created by the guy who did the YT video. He explains that it was an unethical move by HP to tout the Omen Desktop as a purist gaming rig wit unlimited upgradability when they locked the RAM from being upgraded or overclocked.

HP PC's are about longevity and reliability -and less about performance. If you wish to overclock (which increasing RAM frequency is), then you should consider custom built PC.
I don't know about Intel XTU, so I can't comment on that.
You post just appeared... yes, if you can change Default (or whatever) to XMP profile, then that's what you want.

There are no options for XMP profiles. RAM is locked in the BIOS and as well as in their overclocking app. I have a few questions for you or anyone else who is more qualified than I am about these things? I would love to build my own PC as that's what i've done for the past 25 yrs but we all know what it's like trying to source a GPU or the latest CPU. It's scalpers/bots paradise. That's why I went the prebuilt route.

1) What kind of impact would CAS 22 vs CAS 16 have in a game like Microsoft Flight Simulator? I am getting 30FPS LOCKED in 4K Ultra settings. However it does get a choppy along with FPS stutters when trying to hit 60FPS LOCKED.

2) Would Alienware be a better solution?

The BIOS on those PC's are locked but the memory is not the problem it's the game.
Turn your settings down.
As you see here with a RTX 3080 ultra 4K their only getting 42FPS.

The guy who posted the YT video agrees with you. He replied to me and said that CL22 RAM is not "ideal" but the impact between CL22 and CL16 would be minimal in games. He said he plans on doing a comparison video to show the results. Yeah, I agree that MS Flight Simulator is like Crysis because it can get demanding although I can hit between 40-55 FPS depending on the area. But when I lock the game at 60FPS I see stutters and choppiness. If I lock the game at 30FPS it's ultra smooth even flying in NYC over the Empire State Building in 4K Ultra settings. In fact it really doesn't dip below 29FPS as I watch the counter.

However someone posted a video playing MS Flight Simulator with a Ryzen 5800X and RX 6800 XT and he was consistently getting 60FPS in 4K Ultra settings.

I guess I misunderstood the "dilemma" in your first post. I though you're disappointed by fact that RAM doesn't run according to it's specifications.

What kind of impact would CAS 22 vs CAS 16 have in a game like Microsoft Flight Simulator?
-that a different thing.
Yes, there's a difference between CAS 22 and CAS 16, as is the difference between 2666MHz and 3200MHz. How much impact that difference has depends on software. In certain applications difference is not worth mentioning, while in other it can be quite important. But in general, difference in total performance isn't that big as one would assume.
Let me explain what I mean... 3200MHz is 20% more than 2666MHz. But no matter what software you use, total performance (speed) won't become 20% faster -not even close.
Games are usually limited by CPU/GPU, while RAM speed plays a minor role.

First I guess you did not even bother to see the link I posted to the RTX 3080 performance.

You should not be locking it at anything.

I can make a video of my 1070 running it at 200FPS ultra 4K. Don't take everything you see on YouJunk as absolute and you also have neither the 5800X or the RX 6800XT.

EDIT This explains what goes on fairly well, NOTE their not using Ultra setting. Watch all of the video.

Nope, I did look at the link you posted. I just didn't say I did, that's all. Before I purchased the Omen 30L rig with the RTX 3080, I was considering an Alienware Aurora with the 5800X and RX 6800 XT which is why I started to look at video's with that setup on YT.

In the MS Flight Sim settings the only two options I see are 30FPS or 60FPS. I don't see where you don't have either option.

Can you not change it in your control panel?

Also watch the video I listed above on my EDIT watch all the video it explains the FPS fairly well and Note their not on Ultra settings. Their even one part where they are getting over 60 but say it feels like less.

Okay I disabled V-Sync and I got noticeable screen tear when panning left to right/right to left. I locked it at 30FPS and it pretty much stayed there and was a very smooth experience. I have seen that effect happen wrt to getting over the desired FPS and makes things look slower. There was a game called Grand Prix series where it was CPU bound and if you dialed up the FPS to say 60 the game looked a lot slower because it made the CPU work a lot harder. But that was a game engine written around the CPU because 3D graphics cards weren't what they are today back in 2001.

I would lower your settings just a bit and try for 60 FPS. Most of the time their very little visual difference in Ultra and High.

Right now i'm getting solid results in 4K Ultra with everything dialed up at a locked 30FPS. What i'm hoping for is that when they release the XBOX Series X/S version they will be optimized for the consoles. And as the Flight Sim lead project person said that they plan on using the optimized tricks of the XBOX version and using it on the PC version. So in the future we should see performance improvements going forward.

The Series X has 16GB of RAM and that's what MS Flight Sim is using. It's pushing 16GB of memory. I'll probably stick with the current settings unless some future updates cause the performance to take a hit then i'll have to dial things back. And point well taken on those YT video's with the unrealistic framerates.

The HP omen bios is super frustrating. Same issue with a friend's 25L. You can't even "upgrade" the memory since you can't adjust timings. We found some cheap used 3200mhz ram that defaults to 2100mhz. At least you're getting 3200mhz out of them, even if the CL is high. My friend also had issues with heat, got new fans. He found a 3070 and that didn't fit the case... Got a new case and the 24pin would interfere with the 2.5 slot gpu. Had to do a vertical riser to get things working.

There's a YT video posted by PC upgrader HWSense. He found a way around the locked BIOS by running Intel's XTU. It allows you to run higher speed RAM and use XMP profiles. Give this a try !
