Hi everyone. I feel like this might be an easy question with an obvious answer, but my knowledge on GPU's and how games utilize them could definitely be better, so in an attempt to understand more I'm posting this.
Specs:
i5 2400s @ 2.5ghz
GTX 750ti 2gb
8gb DDR3 RAM
I'm seeing some weird GPU usage on Tomb Raider (2013). I'm running it at the 'high'preset with vsync turned on (60hz monitor). In big, vast, open scenes with mountains and far away objects i'm seeing dips into the 35-50 FPS range, while in close up scenes inside buildings, small spaces, or even looking at the ground i'm getting a consistent 60 FPS. This sounds normal, as the GPU is not needing to render/display as much. This is where I get confused though:
In the big open-world scenes where my FPS is low, i'm seeing GPU utilization of around 50-60%
In the smaller scenes with a consistently higher FPS i'm seeing gpu utilization of about 90%+
So why are those big open-world scenes not making use of more of the GPU? It's not like I've hit my FPS cap of 60, there is still more FPS to gain, and yet the GPU doesn't seem to be working as hard as it could be? Are the big open scenes hitting some parts of the GPU really hard and then leaving other parts under-used? I don't really get why i'm not seeing a higher FPS with a higher utilization like in the smaller scenes.
Sorry if this is a really basic question. My google-fu is subpar and I was unable to find anything else online.
