Is this the best free way to convert avi to dvd?

Hey folks,

I have some avi files with ac3 which I'm converting to dvd video files.
Here's the general steps I'm taking. I was wondering if I'm going about
this the best way. By the way, I'm looking for free methods only.

1. If multiple avi files, append them together with VirtualDub
2. Extract ac3 (to a .ac3 file) using VirtualDubMod
3. Extract video only (to a .m2v file) using TMPG Enc
4. Use IFOEDIT to conver the .m2v and .ac3 into DVD Video Files.
5. Use DVDShrink if video files too large to fit on 1 dvd
6. Burn with Nero

Is there a better way out there that's still free?

Oh, and my TMPG, Enc free trial is about to end so I guess I won't be able
to extract the video for much longer. Is there a free program that's easy
to use and has good quality which I can use to create a video only .m2v from
avi file?

Thanks!

This can all be done with the simplest open source video editing tools for
no cost. Steps 1-3 would be done with transcode or ffmpeg. Step 4 would be
done with mplex and dvdauthor. Step 5 would not be necessary. Step 6 would
be done with your choice of cdrecord-prodvd or growisofs.

The advantages to you: no cost at all (not even the OS), the entire process
is scriptable (i.e., you stick a blank DVD in the drive, drop the AVI onto
the AVI2DVD icon and you get a DVD out the other end), you get better
performance, and the same scripts/programs/processes would work on a PC,
Mac, Sun Workstation, etc.

The disadvantages: you would need to allocate some space to install Linux or
FreeBSD on your PC or get another machine running a POSIX-compliant
UNIX-like operating system
(Linux/FreeBSD/MacOSX/Solaris/AIX/Tru64/whatever).

Ok....you sold me. I've already got Linux in a dual boot situation (I'm not
a Linux expert though...but can do the standard install of applications), so
this is no problem. I've been trying to research these methods though and
I've only been able to find 1 tutorial, which is here:
http://mightylegends.zapto.org/dvd/dvdauthor_howto.php

Do you know of any others? I'm specifically interested in setting it up the
way you mentioned where I just drag and drop it onto the AVI2DVD icon. How
did you pull that one off? That tutorial doesn't talk about that. Do you
have a link that talks about how to set that up?

Thanks for the help!

Well, transcode manual has many examples.
For the muxing to dvd .vob if you want more then one channel
look at my site http://www.home.zonnet.nl/panteltje/dvd/
There are some scripts too, but I mainly did the oposite, mpeg2 to divx :)
or mpeg2 to dvd of cause.
You will need dvdauthor to make a DVD image, and then burn with growisofs,
some links are there too.
Once you figure it all aout you can make an executable script, and
then call that from a GUI.
Not me, I do it all in an xterm with scripts, as filename will constantly
change.
It will all (studying transcode manual, and testing etc..) take a long time.
But you will have full control for free.
And very good quality is possible.
