is using a cheap brand name power supply really that big of a deal?

Is it a lie? Technically, no. All it means is that they did internal tests and it passed. What it doesn't tell you is how they tested, which is more important. When you see a PSU review, the reputable sites explain their methodology. Every company does their best to make their product look as good as possible, however, a companies internal tests are meaningless in the real world.

It's true as far as their testing, but testing from reputable sites would shed more light and likely show it's a fire hazard. They are on the "replace immediately" list for a reason and price is not part of it.

Well no, one of the big reasons that people recommend good PSUs is that crappy ones like that can damage other components if they blow. Also, PCs these days get most of their power from the 12V rail, and that PSU is only rated for 16A (192W) on the 12V rail. That's terrible, a good PSU should be able to supply nearly its entire rated wattage at 12V.

I wouldn't count Logisys as "name brand".

Worst case is it fries the system and possibly burns the house down. Skimping on the PSU is never a good idea and not a lesson you want to learn the hard way.

what does this mean

in a word, yes. Yes it IS a big deal.

PSU's are arguably the most important, impactful part of your PC. They are also THE MOST potentially harmful.

So..if I was going to skimp and save...this isn't the place I'd do it *shrug*.

I would note that these companies that make these power supplies that explode, burn down your home, and kill people, are still in business. I seriously doubt that any company could stay in business of there were being constantly sued due to their faulty components.

That said, it is still a wiser investment to purchase a quality power supply.

They keep in business as they are based in places such as china where they can't be touched by other country's
Although its rare for them to actually cath fire the just tend to pop spark and fry components
