Promote violence?! WTF? Are you feeling violent? Do you feel the overwhelming need to lash out as a result of reading opinions contrary to your own?

No one is disputing the fact that Vista was a poor release.

Seriously tho, stating that Win7 a candy coated version of Vista, is in my opinion, a statement that seems to come from a place of where one has not spent a considerable amount of time using and evaluating Win7.

But the really sad part of this entire discussion is that the OP asked a relatively simple question regarding Vista and Win7. Sadly it seems from your very first post in this thread that you had an axe to grind as demonstrated by your reply to the OP
XP SP2 is going to be around for quite a while, get use to it.
And then fuhgitabowdit, after your reply to croc, and everybody else you don't agree with, this thread slides down a slope of tit-for-tat epeen bickering.

Thank You DeeTee_uk, I am looking forward to getting windows7 when it officially comes out , my friend was the one who said it wasn't as good but after time and updates i am sure it will blow vista away.Hey guys i didn't mean trying to stir anything up in here i just wanted some opinions on which one was better. But i must admitt it has been quite interesting listening to you guys as it always is.

Glad to have helped.

If you have a spare drive kicking about, there's still time to try the release candidate yourself. The details are all here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
It's nigh on the full version, and is free until it starts shutting itself down every two hours next March. Worth a try, if only to rule out the possibility of you utterly hating it.

@habitat87 - No, it's not. But the release candidate is. I would be massively surprised if there were any major changes between the two.

Partly the former, but mostly that they are due to RTM anytime soon. It would be a baffling decision to make wholesale changes so late in the development.

Actually i have a brand new WD green drive that i was going to use on my new build in a few weeks, I can put the RC version on that for temporary and try it out, then i can tell everybody what think.Let me get started .

There are no 'truths' or 'facts'. There are only theories and opinions. Get over it. What is your MS cert. #? Mine is 5 digits, the highest order digit is a '1'. I have tested most every release of NT based code for many years, usually from alpha or pre-alpha stage. I have code in many of these releases, notably a few thousand lines in NTFS. I was very much looking for the upcoming WinFS file system, as I think that it is a vastly improved code base compared to NTFS, but not to be. A big disappointment to me, personally, as it also contained a few bits of code that I wrote... being semi-retired, I could have used the income...

That all said, Vista is not bad at all. Compared to where it started in alpha, it is very clean code. Perfect? No. Runs everything? No. Is it MS's fault that companies write code based on a specific OS? No. Is it MS's fault that companies can't (or won't) upgrade their old code? MS, in my opinion, has bent over backwards in the Win7 release to address almost any fault in the OS that was reported via the official bug tracking system. Perhaps your company (or yourself) should have participated in the official MS testing program to make your issues known. That you did not, leaves me with the opinion that you like to complain, but working to fix the problems is 'too hard'.

Win7 at RTM will be the cleanest code MS has released for a long time. It is, at RC, ready for prime-time, but some of the debugging routines need to be cleaned up....

But you are already gone. Time for more important things to do now than continue this coversation with a [strike]Vista hater[/strike] horse's azz. Oh, you are already gone so you won't see this fine display of what it is like speaking with you. If it makes you feel better, "XP roolz dude."

If XP had pre-fetching then it didn't work well. Superfetch worked well provided you went and got a coffee waiting for your system to become responsive at startup (or provided you bought an SSD). Superfetch in the Win 7 RC doesn't seem to bug me nearly as much.

Windows xp uses more resources that 3.0....... OMG! RAM is cheap, and if you're still using a pentium 3 then its time to upgrade. Seems to be the natural progression of things: hardware gets better/less expensive and operating systems take advantage of this with added features and securities.

Google chrome OS is intended for netbooks. Tells me that it will revolve around internet browsing (getting email). I honestly doubt it will be picked up by large corporations, but who knows......competition is good for industry.

I disagree. The natural progression is hardware gets better and less expensive -> Windows gets more bloated so that productivity remains fairly similar to before. Many Linux distros can do the same or more than Windows while requiring far less resources. Worse still is the amount of hard drive usage by Vista, which admittedly was improved with Win 7 by ripping out useful features. Please list the features that Vista has compared to XP that justify the enormous increase in hard drive space it requires.

IMO that notion that because hardware is cheap that Windows should suck it all up doesn't make sense to me. I guess that Windows should use 15TB when we all have 250TB hard drives just because it's a good space filler?

Hewlett Packard has never updated its PrecisionScan LT to work with Vista. That's the software for one of its most popular scanners. And it was a perfectly good scanner.

Microsoft never fixed a problem that prevented its Visual Basic 5.0 Professional from working with Vista. Ok, that's older software. But it was good software.

One annoying thing is that when I select text in Vista, and then try to print, the default choice is no longer to print the selection.

OTHER than those points, though, my personal experience has been that Vista has worked very well.

lol wow. first you raged about how Vista is bad, and how W7 is seemingly going to be bad even though it's not even released yet? when you're the XP with no service pack god. and now you rage about how MS is full of #*@U@! while you're using XP? lol. what happened to you being gone?

and how can you have an opinion on something that would clearly need data to back up your premise? if your opinion is that most ppl who used Vista pre-Sp1 that wants to shove it up MS's ass, do you have any data to back that up? it's like saying, "oh, i think the sky is bright purple today even though it's blue" is pretty delusional and most people would look at you as though you haven't put down all those herbs. seriously, find data of people who shoved Vista up MS's ass and then i'll believe you.

but since you're "gone", i would naturally assume that you won't be replying to my post or anyone else from this point on. :)

Why? Proving you wrong has become quite amusing... And I have to say, that so far, you've shown me nothing.

But, here's a little more. Lists Of XP's BUGS Which Microsoft Have Fixed Hundreds fixed!?!? Wow... And this is what they've *Published*!!

SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324720

SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113

And you know - After 6 years and two services packs, do you think Microsoft finally got it perfect??

Nope - Here's hundreds more: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480

Did they *finally* get it perfect? ummm..

I noticed something very odd when I tried Windows 7 & Windows Vista RCs.
My initial impression of Vista: I hated it, worst thing ever.
My initial impression of Win7: I loved it and accepted that I'd be moving away from XP finally.

While they are very similar, as others have stated, it just feels like a Vista "that works". I don't feel bogged down with needless popups/messages/background processes, and all of my apps and hardware seem to play much nicer with it. I have no complaints yet with 7.

You certainly don't have the command of English that most people old enough to have worked on DARPA do, but we can see now why its implementation was so short-sighted. Now go back to playing with your ghetto-fabulous computer and yourself.

I did the xp sp3 on three different laptops, the latest was a dv9005 us pavilion vista capable, it slowed the piss out of it. Supposedly just security, but every pc that tried it, goes back to service pack 2 with an increase in speed.

If guys know anything its that, its not where you start its where you finish!!!! Vista, yes, did have big performance issues upon launch but since sp1 vista has out performed XP in almost every way (except data transfer). When sp2 was launched vista got even better. The 64bit support for vista is far better than xp ever was.The GUI of vista is outstanding and if you complain that it uses so much ram then you are fighting a loosing battle because windows 7 practically uses the same amount. IF we think of it why not!!!! Ram is so cheap these days its not funny 4GB is now the standerd for a decent computer not 256mb as in windows xp.

You see in my opinion the biggest reason, when you mention vista, people say what a bad OS is that it is now like a sterotype. The ignorant people who have prehaps not had hands on experience with vista say its crap because other people say that. Its all a circle of ignorance. If you want a good looking OS with lots of features then upgrade your PC dont blame microsoft. Cause actually its not goona help really!!!

You're so obessed with hating on Vista that you fail to realize XP was exactly the same way at launch. Expecting software or hardware that is 5+ years old to work on a modern OS is unrealistic. Everyone complains that Windows is so "bloated"... yet they expect it to run every single piece of software and hardware on the market regardless of it's age. Well guess what? You can't have it both ways... you either kick your vendors in the ass and get them to update their software / drivers or you put up with more bloat. Nice way to try to misquote me, by the way... leaving out the 5+ years part to make yourself look more brilliant, did you?

Habitat, in order to actually have a valid opinion on Vista or Windows 7 requires you to actually USE the OSes in question... not just regurgitate a bunch of "facts" (most of which are opinions themselves) and try to make them yours.

Now since I have actually used the OSes in question, that makes my opinion more valid than yours. You can read all the articles you like, but that doesn't make your opinion valid... in fact, it's not even your opinion to begin with... it's someone else's. I like Vista and I like Windows 7. I can say this because unlike you, as I've said, I've actually taken the time to use them myself.

You need to realize that just because someone writes and article and posts it on a news site or the internet in general doesn't make it fact. Any time someone says they either like or dislike a product, they are giving you an opinion. Any article written with an opinion will have a slant towards that opinion. You can take facts about any product and make that product look good or bad... every product has pros and cons. You should be formulating your own opinions and stop letting everyone else formulate them for you.
