Valve already has support for Wine in Steam and constantly updates to make it work better for Linux users.

None of the current Mac mouses are one button anymore, this is an old outdated stereotype. Besides, there is nothing that stops a serious gamer on a Mac from buying a G500 or other gaming mouse like most of us do.
 
Maybe this will influence apple to finally go at least somewhat open source (like releasing its OS to work on computers other than those set up by apple (which it can do)) and finally become a serious competitor (like it was 15 years ago). Then again if this influences game development for linux like posted above then thats great too.
 
Oh God... put steam on macs, thats fine, but don't bother porting your awesome games to it valve! needing to convert to openGL from directX is just as bad as porting to the consoles... at least put it on Linux first!!!

multi platform ftl. valve's games are so good and polished partly because they exclusively develop for directX on PC. just like Uncharted is the way it is because its done by an exclusive dev that only ever makes games for the PS3
 
Don't forget that HL was ported to the mac before activision killed it at the last minute. I really like the increasing options for downloading mac games.
 
Okay, I don't want to start a flame war here, but as a owner of Macs and PCs (Custom and name-brand), I have to say that both computers have their place.

My only macs are portables. (Macbook). Why? You can't upgrade portables, so get a mac! Why not? The main difference (besides the aesthetics) is the OS. Mac OS X = Debian. (Just with shiny icons). But seriously, it does perform well. Application loading and booting is faster than win7 x64 (on the same hardware).

PCs are flexible. You can upgrade them, build them, configure the heck out of them, and play games on them (Although now I guess the tables have turned...).

I use PC desktops (flexibility, upgradeability), Linux servers (Security), and Mac Portables (Portability and OS).

I think that's a fair compromise. But games? Come on. I'm stuck with a GMA 950. Way to go apple. :|

Pretty sure the drivers for both are different, which is what he meant by "millions on R&D for better GPU drivers". Different OS different way to interact with it, different drivers, means more work and money spent to make good drivers.
 
Do you guys think they'll be porting existing games (CS:S, TF2, etc.) to Mac or just be more mindful of both systems for future titles?

The man said drivers, so I don't know what you're on about tuan?

But I will say this, if these "macboys" show demand for these games, and eventually start upgrading and buying graphics cards, ati and nvidia will spend money on better drivers for OSX.
 
woah my quoting worked out badly on my last post, tuans post is there but it isn't framed.

anyways, i think the guy has a point about drivers on macs, and clearly tuan, you're underestimating the importance and cost of driver development. driver develepment for a different OS is not as easy as you say, even if the hardware is identical.
tuan you're unfairly calling him out and that in itself is message board instigating. so if that was your attempt and bringing civility to the comments you've had the opposite effect, since here I am arguing about this.

However, I agree with you in regards to this being a good thing for everyone. Bringing computer games to more operating systems is a must, and a could help the GPU industry. It's certainly worth the cost of driver development if it increases the size of the market.
 
The problem is that it's like 94% windows computers with 5% macs and 1% linux.

Now, unless they can code OpenGL on games for all three platforms it's pretty difficult to write OSX and linux versions.

Now, getting stuff on linux would be great I might stop using windows on my dual-booted laptop. Problem again is that they continually make stuff for mac which is 100 percent different to code for than windows but don't bother with a linux version. Those are much much closer. If you're gonna do one you should do the other. I know that they usually say that linux can be too varied, but if you look at distrowatch debian based distributions are dominating in terms of numbers. Thusly that is what it should be coded for. (not to mention it may well grow because of it)

I second that emotion. A working Mac port would be one step closer to getting the Source engine on Linux - at the very least, the game engines themselves wouldn't be excessively hard to port over, as OpenGL would be a must, and probably OpenAL and SDL.

Graphics drivers, though, might be a pain (looking at YOU, ATi).

IS that an insult by valve, i mean the TF2 turret can up upgraded with miniguns and rocket launchers

while the portal one stops shooting when you life them off the floor...
 
I think this is great and could mean more development for overall Pc games in general. But do Macs have good graphics card? I know there are a few good ones like the EVGA GTX 285 for Mac but that is insanely overpriced and that's just about the only high end card available for them. So, a $1k minimum for a Mac and another $500 to be able to play great games. I love it when people waste their money.

Good thing I'm a PC! lol
 
Oh, clap hands if this means the end of Direct X...it's never been out of betaware. Khronos and OpenGL is hopefully, finally, getting its act together and gaming may be revived across all desktop platforms to include Mac/Windows/Linux. Devs/Publishers would have bigger markets if they got their noses out of Microsoft's brown stuff.

Gaming isn't just about fps. It's about having fun.
