I5 2500k overlcocked to 4.3ghz with cooler

3440 x 1440p ultrawide monitor with AMD freesync

8gb ram

I have ssd and a great power supply.

upgrading my gtx 760 2 gb to something better.

looking at 1060 6gb and 1070 gb but is it worth it to look at AMD because i have freesync on the monitor?

i wanna spend maybe $250 tops.

Some will say yes. The only issue you'll have with the 580 over the 1060 is the 580 uses more power. Spec says 180 vs 120, though different models will change the answer. In DX11 or older games the 1060 will probably be faster, while anything running DX12 should give the edge to the 580. If you are wanting to play the newest games I'd get the 580 over the 1060. I don't think the sync is worth it personally. But not everyone will agree.

good info there 4745454b...this is why I posted this. it looks like nvidia has the raw performance power but do i go amd based on my monitor? thank you for your input.

ishaan - my gut is with you, but should i get amd because of the monitor and taking advantage of amd sync...is that worth anything in the convo?

Hi,

Ya Paynus.I think your logic about technologies like FreeSync is right. These technologies like freesync and gsync allow the monitor refresh rate to change in with how many frames your gpu is spilling out.It works between 30Hz to 144Hz.For ex: if ur gpu is giving out 60fps then your monitor will be running at 60hz.So its smooth for gaming experience.

Then get a Asus STRIX RX570. Its way less power hungry then a rx580 and performs nearly identical (~10% to 25% framerate loss) and its way more efficient then a rx580.

If power consumption is not an issue for u then go for a asus strix rx580.Asus strix are great cards and it has a 3-fan cooling which is awesome.

Thank you,
Ishaan

thank you ishaan for your response, and you really think its worth giving up the 1060/1070 for a rx570/580? nvidia has the speed this last gen BUT it would be worth it to go AMD becuase of my freesync monitor? do not think about power cosumption = my PSU is legit and can do 1060/1070 or any of the se AMD offerings.

If it is between the 580 and 1060 I would choose the 580 just because the performance is so close and I think FreeSync and Gsync are great. Now that I have a Gsync monitor with my 1070 I would never go back to a monitor that does not have adaptive sync.

If it is between the 580 and 1070 I would chose the 1070. It's just in a different performance class than the 1060 and 580.

Unfortunately I think you are going to have a hard time getting one for the $250 max you listed unless you are looking at used cards. In that price range with new cards you can only get one of the cheaper 1060 6GB cards or a 580 8GB.

Hey Paynus.

You are welcome. It will be worth to go with Amd since ur monitor support freesync.

So you are good to go with 570/580.Yes its worth it to go with amd gpu and amd freesync combo. You will experience smooth gameplay.

So you are good to go with RX580.If u can spend some extra $ then try to get a strix version.I recommend it because it has 3 fan-gpu cooler and runs very cool.

Thank you,
Ishaan

After more research, the GTX 1070 smokes the RX580. Should I really get an 580 just because of Freesync? It seems the better choice woulc be go go for the GTX 1070, right?

I had a gtx 1070 and when I upgraded to a 3440 x 1440 monitor, I had to upgrade that too because it couldn't keep up!
Might have to lower settings with those cards, I'd look for Vegas 64 or 580 minimum from AMD

thank you toxic, you upgraded your 1070 to a 1080ti (nice card) and you STILL didn't get an AMD but you're recommending one? Is it becuase of the freesync? My monitor LG 34UC99-W allows for free sync between 55-75 hrtz, don't you think I should still go GTX 1070 over rx 580, since these are the cards I'm basically comparing and trying to figure out if Freesync is worth jumping to AMD since it looks like 1070 is better than 580.

I got my 1070 and 1080 ti because I have g sync, it actually makes a noticeable difference. Never tried free sync but I'd assume it's nearly identical and especially at a high resolution where your frames will constantly be jumping/struggling it would be nice to not have screen tearing due to your monitor adjusting its refresh rate to your fps. Also, what's your refresh rate with free sync off? Some monitors will only hit their max refresh rate, 75 in your case, when free sync is on, so if it defaulted to 60 hz without free sync I would not be surprised. I'd go for an AMD card but make sure the card you get can run 55 - 75 fps at your resolution and game choose by looking up benchmarks.

Looks like the rx 580 can put out about 75 fps in gta on medium, 50 on high. If your ok with turning down some eye candy the 580 should be a good choice, still a very powerful card.

Hey Paynus,

IF i were in your position, i would have went with rx580 because your monitor supports freesync.AMD freesync with amd card like rx580 will be worth it.

Yes, GTX1070 offers more performance but has nvdia gsync.Your monitor doesnt support nvdia g-sync.Moreover that combo will give u smoother experience because of amd freesync support.

Ishaan - thanks man, those were good reads. I researched my monitor and the range of freesync is 55-75 hrtz which i read is not good.

the other thing i guess i should have mentioned is i do enable v-sync in all of my games because i hate tearing, in some games i play at 20-25 frames and don't mind the lower framerate. maybe that might change when i get a new gpu and can get higher rates.
