Eike, sorry for the immature insults that everybody here seems to be
throwing around. I myself am interested in pursuing ludology in
graduate school, and don't see anything wrong with writing a thesis on
online games--after all ludology exists as an official topic in certain
graduate schools.
I just checked the Website, and the rates are as follows (I live in
Tokyo and can read Japanese):
PlayOnline: free
Final Fantasy XI: Requires creating a Content ID within PlayOnline.
For the first character, 1,280 yen per month before
taxes (1,344 yen including taxes)
After that, 100 yen per additional character before
taxes (105 yen including taxes)
Janhourou: (A network Mahjong game, available only in the
Japanese version)
Requires creating a Content ID within PlayOnline.
300 yen per month before taxes (315 yen including
taxes)
Tetra Master: Requires creating a Content ID within PlayOnline.
100 yen per month before taxes (105 yen per month
including taxes)
For the current yen-dollar exchange rates, visit "XE.com - The Universal
Currency Converter ®" (http://www.xe.com/ucc/). There, enter "1" in the
"this amount" column, select "USD" in the "of this type of currency"
column, then choose "JPY" in the "into this type of currency" column,
and click "Click Here to Perform Currency Conversion." When I just
checked, the current rate, as of 10:56 AM, Tuesday, December 21, 2004,
Tokyo time, was 103.870 yen to the dollar.
Sidenote:
Quinch, just because someone is interested in Final Fantasy doesn't
necessarily imply that the person "[isn't] able to wrap [his/her] mind
around the idea od [sic] college, let alone a college fund."
For starters, I've been playing Final Fantasy in Japanese since the
original Japanese Final Fantasy II was available for the regular
Nintendo Famicom, way back in 1989, and am currently playing Dragon
Quest VIII in Japanese on the Japanese PS2.
Second, I just happen to have graduated from Yale University, in New
Haven, CT, with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I also
happen to know how to spell.
Third, I am currently the Games Discussion Forum Moderator for MetroMac
Alliance, a New York-based Macintosh user group (see
http://www.metromac.org/forums2/index.php?s=ddc337a7f854603900baf194eac4a61c&showforum=25).
My handle name there is "DekuDekuplex." You can also read a MetroMac
Express online magazine article I wrote, "Why Apple Can't Afford to
Ignore the Gaming Industry," available online at
http://www.metromac.org/newsletter/express/may04/gaming.html.
And I also happen to be interested in pursuing ludology, or the study of
gaming, in college. (Actually, I'm more interested in the related field
of narratology, which pursues the study of games from the perspective of
narrative, but that's a side issue.) If you haven't heard about
ludology, go read the Saturday, March 06, 2004 article, "Video games
seize ivory towers," by Nick Wadhams of AP, in _The Courier-Journal,_ at
http://www.courier-journal.com/business/news2004/03/06/biz-4-gamers06-6051.html.
If you can't believe _The Courier-Journal,_ then go buy the February 26,
2004, _New York Times_ article, "The Ivy-Covered Console," by Michael
Erard (NYT), available for USD$2.95 at
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F40C1FFB39580C758EDDAB0894DC404482.
The abstract says "Princeton University holds first conference on
video-game studies, new field of academic study...."
For more information on videogame theory, visit Ludology.org at
http://ludology.org/index.php.
And lastly, to everybody here who has posted so far (except Eike): Grow
up and stop harrassing people who are seeking information! After all,
this is supposed to be a fun place.
P.S. I'm not going to read any follow-ups to this thread, since I've
already answered the initial question. If you want to start flaming me,
then go ahead: make my day. You'll be wasting your time.
