My answer also displays some ignorance, (if we're going to start
admitting things like that!)

| USER32.DLL is probably irrelevant to this discussion. Interesting,
| though, I bought this Gateway in '98, so both our files are
| "post-dated."

Is yours 98SE? Yours surely is post-dated, (I think?). But mine... yea,
mine could be... an update I did. It is post-dated only if Compaq did
it. The evidence of my SFCLog.txt may be tainted. Could be something
happened to that after my HDD crash of 2001.

Yea! I see it mentioned twice in 260067UN.INF...

[W98UPD.undo.Cab]
USER.qfe,USER.EXE
user32.qfe,user32.dll

&

[W98UPD.undo.SYS]
USER.EXE,,,4
user32.dll,,,4

Thanks! Let's see... the date on the .inf is... 4/20/00. I guess it must
have been me, not Compaq, that did it. My Staples bill of sale is
showing 1/14/00.

| Did it even apply to you?

I don't recall the circumstances. But I am shutting down well.

| When you going to do some trouble shooting?

Well, I took 260067, didn't I, back in 00?

ACTUALLY, System Monitor often shows a figure under 10%, even with a ton
of stuff running, AND sometimes does flash a zero!

Now, I've opened it. That's what it was doing, until I've also opened
Process Explorer. They both read in the 70% range!

Yeah...
I have a newer machine 2000 GHz, mine is Intel integrated, Celeron P-4.CPU,
Asus P4SGX-MX MB.
I experienced exactly to the letter what PCR described in detail.

Yikes, sorry.... 2000 MHz speed, my head is in the sand. But that would be

No, not really. It might be on slower systems though. When I am testing I
usually use a slower PC but often cheat by making sure that I have 512 MB of
RAM in them. The PC I'm using at this moment (not 9x/ME) is AMD 3700+ with 1
GB of RAM so the resources aren't an issue on this box. When I'm testing an
ME or 98 box, as I said, I tend to make sure there's enough RAM in there to
give me some leeway. I do it on older CPUs though, the ME box that's being
tested with the patch on DSL is only an AMD K6-II.

As an aside, I really can't say that the type of connection has anything to
do with this. If it does then it's not effecting me here.

I'd be happy to test that for you (three systems total without a hitch at
this point, one on DSL and two on dialup) if I could find the post where you
requested people test something for you. If you could give me the actual

Right, it seems cable folk are also afflicted. Anyway, I am
"AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor", by MSInfo. Elsewhere, it is
described as a 533 MHz AMD-K6-2. Now, lets see...

(1) "START, Programs, Acessories, System Tools, System Monitor"
(a) Kernel Processor Usage%.... Well under 10%, even just 1%,
OK, now 14%, no,
7%, wait! 1%, 1%!
(b) Allocated Memory............. 374 M
(c) Disk Cache Size................. 39.4 M
(d) Unused Physical Memory..... 129.2 M
(e) Swap File in Use................ Zero.
(f) Kernel Threads.................. 152

(2) Open Process Explorer, & click Explorer.exe in top pane, showing
..DLLs in bottom pane...
(a) Kernel Processor Usage%.... Averages 70%
(b) Allocated Memory............. 381.3 M
(c) Disk Cache Size................. 39.6 M
(d) Unused Physical Memory..... 123.9 M
(e) Swap File in Use................ Zero.
(f) Kernel Threads.................. 154

It's a chore to type, as I am quicker than it renders!

Process Explorer
(a) CPU Usage.......... Low to mid 70%
(b) Commit Charge... 12.17%
(c) Processes........... 37

Now, I've turned off McAfee's Auto-system Scan, And it hasn't changed
much! Only closing or suspending Process Explorer gets me back to
normal. BUT, really, it's an impressive app & hasn't crashed.

OK, thanks, Star, & thanks, Blanton. It isn't my lowly 533MHz AMD K6-2

Nah, the solution is where it always is: within. (just remove the damn
thing, and restore your registry, perhaps) (of course, that doesn't help
with any replaced files).

It looks to me like that Dyfuca InternetOptimizer isn't on my
computer, after all. I've scanned with Spybot, Adaware, PCcillin, and
now xclean (at the suggestion of PCcillin tech support) and found no
spyware or viruses. I think the problems I was having sound like those
others who have had problems since KB891711 are having. And, since I
unchecked KB891711 from my startup programs, I haven't had a problem.

As for the problems I was having before the KB891711 download (when I
was getting intermittent "Illegal Operation" messages), that hasn't
happened, either, since I uninstalled my GoBack program, which was a
startup program.

Now my worry is that I'm not protected from what KB8891711 was
supposed to protect me from. But, if I recheck it (because I didn't
delete it), I'll just have IE freeze on me again, and I need it.

You are right. As I posted elsewhere in this thread, it looks like

Did you try a plain dial up connection without the Netzero software?
Did you call to see if others reported problem?

Just FYI, I found this post from a "hoseknows"
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12875676~start=1~mode=flat
In one day I have had three machines all running W98 SE install the kb891711
patch. Two of the three machines were brought to the house (been down with
the head cold from Hades) and would not exhibit the BSOD until connecting
through a dial-up (NetZero). Everything else would run fine including
broadband internet connections. Only during the dial-up connection would
they immediately BSOD. Uninstalled and re-installed NetZero with no change
in condition. Disabled the KB891711 on both and the machines would dial-up
just fine. Removed NetZero and installed the Road Runner dial-up program on
one machine. Allowed KB891711 to run again and dialed up RR. No problems.
Removed RR and re-installed NetZero with patch still engaged. Again we had
BSOD immediately on connection

I have an AMD k6-2 450MHz and no problem with the update.

It looks like all the files will go, looking inside 891711UN.INF. So
will the Registry entries. Restoring an older Registry is problematical,
because everyone took KB888113 with KB891711. Surely you wouldn't want
them to lose half of KB888113? (DON'T answer that, Colorado!)

| Nah, the solution is where it always is: within. (just remove the
damn

help

If that's the case, maybe the best bet is to first uninstall it, reboot, and
then restore the registry to the predated point (IF you saved a copy).
