That is good news! I have half a mind to go & punch that Jack E.
Martinelli in the nose, over in the Terhune thread, for implicating
slower AMD, & other miscellaneous reasons!

The point is /Restore will undo every Registry entry made since the date
of the RB..cab being restored, not just KB891711 stuff. So, exercise due
diligence before giving such advice as to uninstall it & do a /Restore!
You may be getting the Registry of some other update as well.

Even if KB888113 hadn't come in at the same time, some apps may be doing
a stealth update. I KNOW NetZero does. Look at my last SFCLog.txt! I did
not know Netzero was doing this...!...

Yes, of course, that is certainly true! But how long ago was this
anyway? If it was quite awhile ago, maybe you can just uninstall the
update, and all is well, and you don't even need to bother with the
registry. That's probably the most likely case.

Holy ^&*( Batman!

At some point you've got to ask yourself if NetZero is really THAT
inexpensive. How much bandwidth do they chew up serving ads to your
box? And do they glean information about your 'net travels/habits
from their servers and share/sell it to third parties?

I ask myself the same questions about my ISP every year or so and am
always watching for the tradeoff between what gets me the "best"
connection and the lowest cost.

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)

AFAIC, any ISP that requires additional software, that cannot be
connected to by setting up a simple DUN connection, is an ISP that ain't
worth diddly.

Why don't you set up a plain DUN connection to test as I have suggested? It
could be a Net Zero problem.

Mae.
In an earlier post I addressed this.... I have a simple/straight DUN
connection. Have **never** used the ICW period. I experienced exactly what
PCR described after install of KB8891711.

It is **Not** Net Zero.

I have a newer machine, 2 GHz, Intel integrated, Celeron CPU.

I just read, video adapter drivers may be the new source of **suspicion**
w/W98-me. If true, then W98-se is probably also is affected by same source,
if indeed, video adapters do prove to be the source.

Yep. At $9.95/month, Netzero/Juno is $10/month overpriced. Not only do
you have to use that streaming-adware program of theirs to login, it has
to use IE only (to launch, thankfully you can minimize IE and surf with
something else)and it decides what your start page is-- namely the NZ
home page which is wall to wall ads. Did I mention they try to nail you
with popups too? Lights up the Google bar like crazy. Oh, and every 5-10
minutes they pop up a little box saying you're going to be disconnected
in 10 seconds unless you click the cancel button in the dialogue box.
And of course, the continuous "background" downloading of video ads you
get to watch next time you login to their "service". Nice. I am
dumbfounded by what people are willing to pay for.

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)

No, no; once you begin to pay, there are no adds, except if you click
for them. For $9.95 per mo., supposedly I get unlimited connection time.
I DO get plenty, but eventually they will bump me off. If I want, I can
spend another dime & reconnect. Usually, I will work offline at that
point (like now), & then reconnect to send them from the Outbox.

The rest of what you say does worry me some. I especially wonder about
these stealth updates! For a while, they even put something new in my
Startup Group...

spc_w Registry (Per-User Run) "C:\Program Files\NZSearch\hcm.exe" -w

, but THAT seems recently to have become unchecked in MSConfig, & I
deleted it in the Registry. Hcm.exe, itself, apparently has disappeared,
but that folder NZSearch\ still exists. There are three Registry keys
that still do reference it & SearchEnh1.dll inside, in a complex way,
though. I guess I must leave it be a while.

I swear, there USED to be an item for NZSearch in Add/Remove, but that
is gone! Some day, surely, I'll click "Uninstall.exe" in that folder,
just to see what happens to those Registry entries. And I'll delete
them, if they survive!

Right. If a "simple" DUN does it, then it is unlikely to be NetZero at
fault. Also, that great detective MVP Martinelli never did mention
NetZero as a suspect in Terhune's thread. (I'm sure I'd remember that,
as I do his sinister innuendo about my 533 MHz AMD K6-2 processor!)
Anyhow, NetZero does not permit connection through my own DUN, even if I
did know how to create one or what to do with it.

I guess my write-up is confusedly written-up.

If an instance of IE is open offline, IE will continue to work after going online, UNTIL that instance is closed. Then, the BSOD resumes at every attempt to open another IE or click an URL.

This is true, despite NetZero still caused a BSOD after it connected while trying to open it's home page.

Trying it again, with my entire Startup Group enabled....

(1) NetZero connected, with it's normal orderly BSOD.
(2) Setting the open instance of IE to go online, it seems to work, (just as it did with the sparse startup).
(3) Clicking URLs in my "URLs to See" folder opens them fine in that original instance of IE.
(4) OOP... clicking my IE shortcut (which would open a new instance) did cause that BLOD.
(5) OOP-- R-Clk an URL, Open in New Window, also BSOD's.

So, it's nothing in my Startup Group doing it. I just have to have an instance of IE open, before I go online with NetZero, which BSOD's at opening it's home page. BUT IE will then continue to work from the instance I had open. A new instance BSOD's, but the original will continue to work.

What does it all mean?

I guess my write-up is confusedly written-up.

If an instance of IE is open offline, IE will continue to work after going
online, UNTIL that instance is closed. Then, the BSOD resumes at every
attempt to open another IE or click an URL.

** That's interesting, you tried going to the folder, and send a shortcut of
the executable to the desktop. Uncheck from msconfig, restart, launch IE,
minimize, connect and get IE homepage loaded, and then try running KB891711
manually. You have tried the above ???

This is true, despite NetZero still caused a BSOD after it connected while
trying to open it's home page.

Trying it again, with my entire Startup Group enabled....

** I showed you my startup processes, can't hardly get more minimal then
**My Group**.

(1) NetZero connected, with it's normal orderly BSOD.
(2) Setting the open instance of IE to go online, it seems to work, (just as
it did with the sparse startup).
(3) Clicking URLs in my "URLs to See" folder opens them fine in that
original instance of IE.
(4) OOP... clicking my IE shortcut (which would open a new instance) did
cause that BLOD.
(5) OOP-- R-Clk an URL, Open in New Window, also BSOD's.

So, it's nothing in my Startup Group doing it. I just have to have an
instance of IE open, before I go online with NetZero, which BSOD's at
opening it's home page. BUT IE will then continue to work from the instance
I had open. A new instance BSOD's, but the original will continue to work.

** Try AGAIN, send shortcut of the goofy executable to desktop, have IE
open, open .html from TIF and wait before you launch KB891711, have your
connection to Net Zero. I would think since instance of IE is minimized,
you shouldn't get BSOD, **afterall you will already have an instance of IE
open w/page loaded**?

** I only tried launching IE w/KB891771 checked, but when I unchecked it all
was fine. So, I don't understand, why you can't manually launch it after IC
and IE is launched ??

What does it all mean?

** MVP's are working on it for sure.... Microsoft, has not made any public
announcements.... I'm very disappointed in Microsoft!!

I've received a request from the team that's working on the
KB891711 issue. They would like everyone in the USA who has had problems
with KB891711 to call 1-866-PCSafety (1-866-727-2338). If you can help
them with some info, they say they're close to reproducing the
problem--first step toward solving it. I have asked for, though not yet
received, assurances that callers will be taken more seriously than has
been reported thus far.

(According to at least a couple of people, when they called PSS they
were told that KB891711 wasn't a critical problem on Win98 and to just
uninstall it. KB891711 deals with a very *serious* vulnerability,
affecting pretty much all Windows systems, and anyone who can't get
patched decently should don at *least* a dozen condoms before journeying
out onto the internet.)

See Don Kirkpatrick's reply to me on this issue. As I suspected, the
right hand still doesn't know what the left hand is doing at Microsoft.
I'd hold off on directly calling MS on this issue until this gets
straightened out.

The latest from MS:

"Microsoft has received reports about issues with KB891711 on Windows
98,
Windows 98 SE and Windows ME. At this point, we have been able to
confirm these reports and are currently working on a resolution.

"Please note that by uninstalling the current update, the machine will
return to a vulnerable state. At this point, we are currently not aware
of customer's being exploited by way of the vulnerability fixed in
MS05-002 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME. If you need
additional assistance regarding this update, please contact +1 (866)
PCSAFETY."

I'm now assured, and fairly confident, that anyone who answers that
number will be up to speed on the issue.

It is only messing with the dial-up accounts.

I went ahead and uninstalled the update. When I run Windows Update, I
assumed it would detect that it wasn't there anymore and recommend I download
and install it again, but it didn't. Is this something I should worry about?
I can't find the download for Windows 98SE to do it manually anyway. They
just say you have to use the update program.

In order for KB891711 to be offered again at Windows Update, you have to
manually search for remove the files related to it--Uninstall doesn't
get rid of it entirely. Of course, if it causes your system problems,
you don't want to reinstall it, anyway, and I'm sure that if a new,
repaired version is issued, it will be again offered by Windows Updates,
whether you remove the files or not.

Also, these more recent updates for Windows 9x systems are often *only*
offered via Windows Updates. No stand-alone installer is available.

In short, forget about it for now.
