hi there gents, i need help!
i've built a new PC a few months ago and i've been getting these completely random restarts: basically i'm using my PC for whatever (playing games, watching videos, browsing the web etc) and sometimes i'm getting these weird crashes where my PC freezes and restarts itself. no BSOD, no warning, no nothing. i've checked the event log and got this:

level: critical. source: Kernel-Power. event ID: 41. task category: (63)

GENERAL:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

what does this means? that my PSU is malfunctioning? GPU? RAM?
every component is new and not OC'd so i don't really know what to do:

MOBO: gygabite GA-880GM-D2H
CPU: FX-8350
GPU: R9-290
PSU: Seasonic S12G 750w 80 plus GOLD
RAM: 8GB Team Elite (one stick)
OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit Pro (Genuine and licensed)

I also have a corsair PSU. In my case it was a CX 430 since my system is on the older side and the GPU i have is more entry level. It was the advice i was given and i took it. In all honesty, it did work well for about 6-8 months before i started having the issues. Like you i think it was after driver updates to my GPU.

Anyways like i said so far so good. Will order all parts for new PC with in the next week. Once i put it all together i will install the GPU and see how it goes. If it all works well than it was the PSU but if it doesn't, guess it was the GPU.

Im actually running into Kernel-power 41 too.
My system is:

Mobo: ECS h61h2-m2 Bios V 2.0
Intel® Core™ i5-2310 Processor
Not sure on my RAM, 1x DDR 4GB
PSU Corsair CX 430 (brand new)
Graphics Card (brand new, tested for disabling onboard graphics) EVGA GT210

First of all, installed Win7 x64 in a clean slate. Installed all needed and updated drivers.
Then I ran Open Hardware Monitor and CPU-Z, no temperature, voltage or clock looking weird.
next, installed new PSU, then graphics card. Disabled Intelspeedstep on bios, aswell as any overclock setting, and onboard audio card.
next, deleted RACTASK and removed ALL sleep settings and energy saving options.
Ran memtest86, all good with my RAM. Checked mobo for defective caps, none bent or busted.

The reboots come fast and without BSOD, they got better, but still happening with cold boot, after 1-2 hours rolling I can work all day (8am-5pm) without a problem, but the first hour i still get 1-4 random reboots. I got better with heat and after installing the graphics card. I'm guessing some circuit or mobo/processor pin got busted/bent somehow and it is dilating with heat and working fine after that. Thoughts ?

Ok, had this similar problem as well. Been reading this also on a similar thread http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/46250-63-random-restarts-critical-kernel-power-event-task .

I was originally using this:
AMD FX6300
Gigabyte 990FXA-D3
Kinston 8gb (4x2 single channel)
Asus GTX 760
Seasonic S12II-620w

I don't really recall that I encountered this problem in my previous build, but when I changed by CPU & mobo to Intel I5-4690K and MSI Z97s Krait edition, it started to happen after installation. Particularly after I started playing games.

This is what kept on occurring:

So after trying to re-seat the some card (creative sound card, vc, mem card), and still nothing. Thought it might be the PSU (around 2 yrs old i think), but kinda doubt it. Then this happened.... I suddenly though of taking one of the memory card and just use 1 4gb stick.... and VOILA!

I'm monitoring my computer and will update if the problem occurs again. But if not, then my guess is that the timing of both mem cards were a bit off or it just so happens that the one i pulled out was beginning to die...?

Hope this helps.

well.... turns out that pulling one mem stick didn't work (worked fine for 1 day but problem returned the next day).

turns out I think it was my add-on card (pci-e to usb 3 port). after taking it out, my pc randomly reboot again twice, and then that's it! it's been fine ever since, just in time to play GTA V! =)

This has worked for me. No shutdowns for the first week :) Follow his steps through to disable Prefetch from learning and adapting into a bug. This had plagued me through Win 7 and 10 (and clean installs) since May, where I had replaced the PSU, RAM, GPU, and HDD after eliminating every non windows software as the culprit. I was about to replace the mobo and case, and basically have a new system that may or may not have been plagued by this bug.

Update: my mobo fried out. I ended up replacing the board, and cpu, and no more issues. So I take it that my mobo was the issue overall. The japanese guy's solution worked for about a month, before the mobo broke down.

Ok just figured I'd put in my 2 cents. I was plagued with error 41 random reboots for 4 months. This was right after upgrading my pc. I ordered i7 4.0 devils canyon, Msi Gaming 5 mobo, 16 gig Gskill 1600 dd3 ram,.and a new monitor Asus 144hz 3d led 24 inch. After 3 clean installs of windows 8 and 10 I decided that it wasn't corrupted files. I also made sure my timing on my ram was correct using the intel xmp function. Also watched many youtube videos that directed me to turn off all fast booting options built into my mobo and windows. I also changed many settings in the power options in advanced tab so that power was always on and no sleep mode or hibernation active. Still got reboots. I mean like 4-5 times a day. I then decided after reading psu failure was the most common error 41 fix I bought a new Evga gold standard 850 watt psu, along with a new gpu Ati Sapphire r9 390, and a new Samsung 850 250gig ssd. Reformatted again. Still had problems after setting everything up again as listed above^. So I continued to look on the net for possible problems. I came across some usb 3.0 information and the the light bulb came on. I had been putting my mouse and keyboard into usb 3.0 slots instead of 2.0 slots. After putting them into 2.0 slots my random reboots has been solved. So for all of you out there usb 3.0 ports seem to be sensitive to 2.0 peripherals. I hope this solves this problem for everyone that couldn't get the other fixes to work for them.
