Kid building computer?

Hi everyone!
My friend's kid, a 12 year old, built a computer last week, and he is an extraordinary kid. My friend knows little about computers, and did very little tp assist his son.

My question is, do you think this is unusual? Is it a record? Does it make him applicable for an award?

I think it's just that the new generation picks up on this stuff very fast. Building a computer isn't very hard. Anyone with reading comprehension could build a computer. My daughter has been playing online games by herself since she was 2 1/2. She used to sit on my lap and watch me and just figured it out on her own.
 
Why would it be unusual for a 12 year old kid to build a computer? Look at most things in this world. There all heading into Technology. if you want to give him an award, go ahead but, hah. There's kid's out there that run spelling bee's on t.v. They deserve a ribbon? or the kids that play little league baseball on t.v., they get a trophy?
 
No, it's not unusual. I think shortstuff_mt is right in saying kids pick up on stuff very fast (when they want to). Had the technology been in place when we were twelve, I'm sure the majority of the people here could/would have done the same.

By no means should you belittle the fact that he did accomplish it. I think it's pretty cool that your friend's son did figure it out and that your friend encouraged him to do it!

I built my pc when I was 10 all alone, not hard at all... an hour research and your pretty much done.

By the way, I am 15 now and have built 20+ PC'S and sold them, got a good bit of cash now.

That's terrific. Hats off to that kid. Technology is being an integrated part of society now. Computers are such a powerful tool now that there's no point in not letting our youth learn how to master what it can provide for u at a young age. I do think its important for kids to get out outside and not become a fat coffee slurping office junky all day however (*looks down at gut and takes a sip of coffee*).
 
That is great to hear of young people doing cool things like this. But lets keep into perspective. Putting a PC together is not that hard, you simply plug everything in. A few hours of reading on the web and most people can do it pretty easy. For people who have built a few, it is like a 30 minute process. It takes way longer to load and configure the software than to actually put one together.

Different culture, different age group, but when I was 10 I was driving a pickup/tractor/feedtruck everyday. Had to learn how to do it just to get my chores done. If someone saw a 10 year old who could barely see over the steering wheel coming down the road in a pickup today, can you imagine the scenerio that would follow?
And darn it, I don't ever remember getting an award!
I got a good ol fashioned whipping if I didn't get my chores done on time, THAT is what I got.

Or heck just to be funny, I am 50 and this ol fart can assembly a screaming PC in no time, I think that is amazing, now....where is my geritol, damn I am constipated today.
 
Well I upgraded the RAM in my Dell when I was 10, and at 12 I built my own computer. But still pretty amazing because I'm the only person in my school who's made one and people are always asking to come over to my house to see it.
 
It is not unusual in a sense, but it is really just Tue difference between the people who build/ understand computers, the people who can use them, and the computer illiterate. I upgraded my laptop's RAM when I was in grade 9, and built a desktop in grade 10.

The hardest part of pulling the computer imo making the parts list, getting the cash to build it, and plugging in the front panel connectors. Otherwise it is just a 3d puzzle.
 
I was 11 the first time I drove a car over 100 mph. It was my dads '72 olds brougham, and I had to build wooden blocks to fasten to the gas/brake pedals and sat on a couple of couch cushions to see over the steering wheel.

Us old darts may not have had computers to build back when we were 12, but what we did do was pretty amazing for its time.

Hats off to the kid for his accomplishment, but I think he's basically right on track for a future job as a TomsHardware moderator.
 


This is false. New mods are selected over long periods of time by the Admin community. You do not volunteer or apply to become a mod. You are chosen, and you can accept or deny.

Also, for what it is worth, I competed in my first real semi-professional car racing event at 15.
 
If he invented a hardware component maybe that would've been something.

Anyways this thread is old as dust. I think it needs to be locked.
