Does anyone know of a way to NOT kill the knights at Windspear Hills?

I just played through BG1 again and really enjoyed having Ajantis in my
party. I would really prefer not to kill him disguised as an ogre when I
first enter Firkraag's domain. Any help would be appreciated.

You can outrun the knights if you REALLY don't want to kill them. But why
WOULDN'T you kill them? As far as you're concerned, you've been employed to
rid the hills of monsters, and the monsters have conveniently presented
themselves to be killed!

If you flee the battle with the knight-monsters, Firkraag's lair won't be
accessible, and you'll never even meet Garren, let alone go on a quest to
rescue his daughter. All things considered, you're better off slaughtering
the knights. They should have known better than to disguise themselves as
monsters anyway. :-^)

Short of never going to the Windspear Hills, that's not possible without
cheating. The game really wants you to kill him.

Kish and Bob have said it's unavoidable, and they may be correct. I
have always had to kill the knights. However, I had always assumed that
dispell magic/illusion or any of the anti-illusion spells/abilities
should get around the ogre issue.

Is the game coded up so that no matter how powerful your ability to see
through illusion, you are doomed to see them as ogres? Doesn't wisdom
help you see through illusions? What if it were to be boosted to 25?

Maybe this is something which could be modded....detect illusion, or dispel
magic, might open a different cut-scene, involving Garren and the Knights.

It's a Plot-Critical Illusion. Nothing sees through a Plot-Critical Illusion.
