wtf?

I found this thread because I was searching SSD and Gaming. I play Warhammer Online with friends of mine and my 5 year old system is just barely enough to play.

I ordered a new system yesterday and I was a little worried because another friend who has a 3 month old system said he was suffering from lag.

Another friend who was online said he never sees lag, even in the 50 v 50 battles that just wreck performance. The biggest difference we could surmize was that he has a 6 Disk RAID 0 (ballsy, I know, but it's just his gaming system). When you get that many people all together there is a ton of loading that happens. The disks really get thrashed.

So we started looking into trying out an SSD to see how that compares.

I only say this because everyone seems to be writing off disk performance in MMO's as insignificant. It may be that the WD Black HD will go lagless. I hope that's the case. When it arrives in a few days I'll let you know.

I had to get in for around $700. With bundles and stuff, this came out to $712 with shipping from NewEgg.

Do you have a different PSU? If not your going to probably want a bigger PSU. There are four problems that could occur.
1) You are unable to connect the PSU to the video card.
2) The PSU doesn't have enough AMPs to boot the system.
3) The PSU doesn't have enough watts to keep the system running underload (550W is the recommended minimum for a 4870). The system should draw more than 325W under load though, but its still putting lots a strain on your PSU.
4) The 4870 might no fit in that case.

I have another PSU.

And... oh, crap. Yea I was going to reuse a case and sort of shot from the hip with that case. It had a good review and I completely whiffed on niticing that it's MATX. Crap.

OK, well all but for the case...

Thanks for pointing that one out, I would have gotten the box and been all ready and excited to build...

Does anyone have any recommendations for case and PSU without getting crazy?

What are you talking about anti aliasing performance being terrible with ATI? AA is nearly free with the 4870 as it stands, and that's leagues ahead of the competition.

If you bought that back in 2004, you'd have 2gb (which is alright) but I can't even run my desktop with a crappy Pentium 4, even when they were brand new they were just terrible CPUs and never worth the upgrde from a P3. Intel really suffered between the Pentium III and the Core 2s, everything inbetween was utter garbage.

Had you got an athlon 64, it would be somewhat useful.

You say two graphics cards are overkill when a GTX 295 is just two graphics cards stuck together, this is why you get two 295's in SLI it's called Quad SLI.

Hahaha this thread is epic. I actually play Darkfall Online as well and recognize ZtyX's name from the forums. What it boils down to is that this is a cool game but the developers and engineers of it coded it crappy. Most of these problems you are experiencing is just because their servers can not handle it. I run 1 Nvidia 8800 GTS, AMD Athlon 64 6000+ dual core, 4 gigs of ram all on a 250g HDD and Windows XP 64.

With that I maintain a steady 140FPS but in sieges drop down to about 60 or so. I do not recommend a 9600GTX because this game does not work well with them. I have a few clan mates that are having issues with this card and game. The rubber-banding is definitely server side, and seems to be mainly affecting the Europeans and the other people with really low pings because you all run at 30-150 ping and it's to fast for this crap server to handle.

I also recommend having a solid sound card with good drivers because with the way the game is coded you will need it. The only thing you can modify without jacking other crap up is like in game music. We are still basically playing this game in beta right now even though the game was being developed since like 2001, their engine is not that great and it's a very small company that had the game launch in history. But I'm pretty sure once they have fixed all of these coding issues and when they have the money and decide to upgrade all of this is when it will truly shine and they will put up the US server.

This is a great game don't get me wrong but they either need better engineers or more. I mean you can't even edit your in-game sound without turning your system's sound down as well if you don't have Windows Vista .... wth is this?????? Not to mention the fact that this game is using UDP and packet loss owns you hard.

Thousands of people can't even play the game for that reason because when they get near a city or a ton of players they are getting spammed with packets and can't process and get them out fast enough or completely loses them and it's what causes the whole ping going from 200 to 2,034,300 which is also probably another crappy coding error because it's not technically possible to achieve a ping that high.

So in all, give the game time to get out of this BETA phase and get a new server to run on. Upgrade your ram definitely to 8gig+, defragment your HDD and up your virtual memory because it's probably set too low for this game right now and you should see a nice boost in performance.

Also I have a couple of tips to show you how to enable show FPS and bandwidth if you want instead of having to use fraps to see it...
