You have just begun working as a networking consultant for a company called BMCC Associates Inc.
One of your first tasks is to help troubleshoot a small Ethernet network at a Home Insurance office in the city of Pittsburg, PA called Armica Home Insurance Co.

The backbone of this local network consists of four hubs connected in a bus fashion. Three of the hubs service workgroups of 10 workstations each. The last hub services two file servers and two shared printers.

Because of continuous growth within the city of Pittsburg and in anticipation of a heavier workload, this organization recently upgraded its network from 10BaseT to100Base-T. However, they have not seen any of the performance increases they expected.

Before even visiting the firm, what can you suggest as reasons for the less than optimal performance?

1. Write a letter to the President of Armica Home Insurance Co. explaining in non-technical terms why they may not be seeing any performance improvements on their network (even after they upgraded their network speed by a factor of ten). Your letter should include have an appendix (or attachment) where you will specify the network modifications necessary for a 100Base-T operating environment. These network modifications should be very detailed and are intended for the Network Administrator at Armica Home Insurance Co.

The appendix to your letter (for the Network Administrator) should include:
- A network diagram of the components in the modified star topology
- The specific brand of the 48 port data switch (and price details)
- Details on the updated NICs for the 100 BaseT network
- Details on the updated data cables (10 BaseT typically runs on CAT-3 (telephone cable) and they need CAT-5 Ethernet cable)

Solution
How old is this homework question. You would have to dig in the dumpsters to find a machine that uses 10mbit nic. Almost all current machines have gigabit ports built into the motherboards.

Teaching old technology that is not used is a complete waste of time
