Lapping

is it that important to lap ur cpu to overclock, because i dont like the idea of risking damage with lapping and 2, whats the big benefits of lapping thanks :)

btw i got a q6600 stock now, so is it necessery to lap or could i get away with the oc without lapping thanks, just expecting a 600 megahertz increase maximum

per core so its not a mega overclocking project thanks

Lapping can improve things on an inexpensive cooler which has not been machined adequately. Back in the day, it wa srather ez to see a noticeable improvement. Today, with a decent cooler, it is by no means necessary and will void both your CPU and cooler warrantees.

“Prolimatech does not condone any type of lapping done to the CPU or to heatsink base. Every Prolimatech’s heatsink base is designed on a pin-point scale of how the base is to be flat and/or curved where it’s needed to be. We have programed our machines to machine the surface in a very calculated way. Any after-manufacture lapping or modding done to the base will alter the design, hence negating its performance factor as well as its warranty.”

Here's a before and...
Lapping flattens the surface, therefore maximizing the contact area with the heatsink on top of it (assuming that it is flat, as well).

You're looking at a 2-3C decrease in temperatures.

It won't be necessary to lap, what cooler you have will play the biggest part in whether or not you can get to 3.2GHz.

Here's a before and after test.
