Hi

Following on from this thread - https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...2000-no-longer-booting.3877150/#post-23468232 - I've managed to make some progress with getting a laptop working again, but something still isn't right. And I'm not sure what the problem could be. I could do with some advice on what to check/try.

I got a replacement ribbon connector and I've managed to get the laptop to boot up. However, it's temperamental. It only comes on if I take out the power lead and plug it back in, and even then, it's not a guarantee. Sometimes the orange light on the motherboard will change to green and the splash screen appears, but other times it goes back to orange and does nothing. I've reset the BIOS by removing and reseating the coin battery and by going into the BIOS and doing it from there. Sometimes, it will get as far as, what looks like, configuring Windows as part of an update, but then it gives up and it either shuts off, or I get a sad face BSOD. I've tried using my internal SSD from another laptop, but that doesn't work, so I'm not sure if the hard drive just needs wiping. Doesn't explain why it keeps randomly turning off though.

On a couple of ocassions, I have noticed a peculiar smell. It doesn't smell of burning though. It's just a weird artificial smell. So that can't be a good sign. :-\ But it hasn't been doing it much. I've tried taking out the RAM and re-inserting it, but that hasn't helped. With it out, it hasn't booted at all, but it hasn't given me any prompts or info either. I have a multimeter, so if anyone has any suggestions on somewhere to try it to see if a certain component is working, I'm all ears/eyes. :) Apart from that, I'm stumped on what the issue could be and what to try next. It's not like the motherboard is completely dead and even the small board for the power button has blue LEDs come on. It's just I'm unable to hold the power button down to shut it off and when the orange LED on the motherboard goes on and nothing boots, holding it down doesn't boot it back up. I can only take the power lead out and plug it back in.

Thanks

Odd. Started recording a video to post here showing what happens and it's booted up perfectly. 😵

Only time will tell if it continues to though. Not sure what's kicked it into touch. Putting in the other SSD and switching the old back in, or taking the RAM out and re-seating it.

Although it's gone and switched off again. Pressing keys doesn't do anything.

No, I still need some help with this. It was fine at booting for a time and now it keeps randomly switching off. I can't even get it to run a memory diagnostic on boot due to it being slow at loading everything up and then switching itself off. So I've no idea if the RAM is faulty. Are there other points on the motherboard I could test with a multimeter to see if something isn't getting power?
It isn't the HDD either, which I thought was probably corrupt. I've tried a different one, but before it even finished installing Windows, it just switched itself off. 😕
