laptop came with windows 8 but recently is saying I need to activate windows!

Just lately my laptop says I need to activate windows by entering product key or buying a new one, yet my laptop which is nearly 2 years old came with windows 8. If I ignore the message which fills the whole screen, I can still open the internet anyway, but last night after several updates were installed I couldn't get onto the internet, so had to do a system restore. The message is still appearing that I have to activate windows. I don't know the product key. Does anyone know where I can find it, or what I can do about this message? Thanks.

usually there would be a sticker underneath the laptop with the key.

Thanks. I did look at the sticker but it only has a 15 digit code, and the key being requested is a 25 digit code. 5 sets of 5 digits. I can't find a code like that on the laptop. Any ideas? Thanks.
