Laptop model: HP 17-cn0273st; Purchased Oct '23
Windows 11 23H2
512GB NVMe SSD
8GB RAM

This system started out lightning fast to boot (seemed like 5-10 seconds), then got a little slower as MS Office and other apps were added, and seemed to settle at 30-45 seconds. I was OK with that. Then, suddenly, yesterday it took 3-4 minutes to boot. Then, after the desktop was finally displayed, it seemed to work fine opening Office and Thunderbird mail, and whatever else I wanted it to do. Then shutting down took several minutes, just like booting up.

Today it is still taking 3-4 minutes to boot up, so I assumed the slow boot was permanent - and it is definitely unsatisfactory. One thing led to another and I decided to re-load Windows. (I know, why take a gun to a knife fight, but I have never disliked a clean Windows installation.) Anyway, the Windows installation wouldn't get past the point at which it looks for the drive to install Windows on, and that raised my blood pressure a couple of notches because it's the drive with the current Windows installation!!

Not to be denied, I took the SSD out of the laptop to 'find' it on another computer (just to see if something happened to it), and I got a message on the screen (of the second computer) that contained the word, 'bitlocker,' and suddenly I realized the drive can't be seen by another OS because it has been modified by bitlocker and I don't have the key.

Moving forward - - -
It seems to me I have two options. Option #1 would be to reinstall the SSD I have, and try to figure out and correct what's wrong, or - Option #2 - I could get and install a new SSD, and load Windows on it. I lean towards Option #2 because I am confident that would work, but I'm not opposed to Option #1 if there's anyone 'out there' who would suggest some things to do.

My final question (for now) is to ask what can I do with the old SSD if I implement option #2? Is there anyway to erase and format that drive, or has it been irretrievably lost?
Thanks for your time.

If anyone is following this thread, it turns out the problem was caused by external USB-C multi-port adapter. I know --I should have checked that possibility before making this post, but I didn't. I moved the laptop to another location in preparation for disassembly (to replace the SSD), and did not bring the adapter - and turned it on one more time - and waddya know - it booted right up! I have a couple of other computers I can use to see if that adapter screws up every computer, or just my HP - but I'm surely not going to use it on my HP again.
