Hi, apologies if this question is too vague, but my partner wants a laptop with the primary use being 3DS Max, she does game design at university. She has asked me to help her find a laptop appropriate but i know nothing about 3DS Max. These are the 2 laptops I got sent over to evaluate but I am not sure when comparing to 3DS Max performance. If anyone can give me any tips/pointers it would be greatly appreciated. Definitely set on laptop over desktop. Thanks!

What is the budget?

3DS Max can be a breeze or unbearable depending on how many vertices and fine detail the models are. If it's simple vertices, example less than 100 in the model then any current laptop will do with a decent display.
If the models have thousands of vertices just about any new laptop with a 4060 or 4070 will work.

Your question isn’t vague at all — in fact, it’s a very common concern when choosing a laptop for 3D modeling and rendering tasks like those required by Autodesk 3DS Max.

After reviewing the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (G614JVR-N4183), I can confidently say it's a solid choice for game design and 3D work at university level.

Here’s why it stands out for 3DS Max:

Powerful CPU: The Intel Core i9-14900HX is a beast for tasks like rendering, simulations, and multitasking in software like 3DS Max, especially when paired with complex plugins.

High-end GPU: The RTX 4060 with 8GB VRAM is well-suited for viewport performance and GPU rendering (via Arnold, Redshift, or V-Ray). It strikes a great balance between performance and thermal efficiency.
