Question Laptop RAM slot seems to be only taking lower memory stick

I've got an Asus ROG GL753VE, for context.

I bought two DDR4-2400 (same as the stock 8 GB stick originally packaged with) 16 GB Crucial sticks - CT16G4SFD824A. However, I can't get them to work together. The laptop has started up with both of the slots alone in the top slot of RAM, and both ran with the original 8 GB stick in the bottom. But neither new stick will run when in the lower slot of RAM. Is there any reason something like this should be happening where only one specific stick will run in a slot? This is actually the second set of sticks I've tried, but I returned them since it wasn't working on any slot. But these both work fine in the other slot, what could be the issue?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

What BIOS version are you currently on for your laptop? As for your existing setup, try removing the sticks of ram, then the power to the laptop and press and hold down the power button for 30 secs, replace the sticks of ram and then power up with the power brick(not the battery).

The BIOS is version 308. Not sure if this part matters, but the GOP version is 9.0.1056, and the EC version is 2300000F10. I tried replacing the sticks how you mentioned, and I just had a permanent black screen, so that didn't seem to do it.

It might just be a "feature" of the Asus BIOS.

I had similar problems upgrading an HP laptop with DDR3 SODIMMs. Tried to fit 2x4GB but it only accepts 1x2GB and 1x4GB. Swapping memory round didn't make any difference. There seemed to be a hard-coded limit of 6GB.

Have you searched online to see if anyone else is having this problem.

I have, haven't been able to find anything about it online though. Seems weird for a BIOS thing to cap only one of the slots though. Feels like the laptop just doesn't want to let go of that original ram!
