Hi my fujitsu siemens amilo 1505 started turning itself off a few months ago. The fan wasn't spinning so I took it that the 3yr old fan had died and the cpu was overheating. I left it aside for a couple of months thinking I'd eventually replace the fan.

But tried the laptop today and its working grand, the temperatures were around 35 degrees C and too my surprise when the cpu was under load and the temp hit about 60 the fan turned on for about 10 seconds or so, its done that a few times now.

So if you could tell me if my fan is working properly and only turns on at high temperatures, if so why was my laptop shutting down?
Or does my fan need replacing or is there any way to test it out?

Thanks for the help

If the fan was not working when it was shutting down, but it's working now, you have your answer. The laptop was overheating without the fan.

If you want to test the fan, few ways. Run a benchmark software to stress the laptop and see if the fan spins up properly. Prime95 is good to heat up the CPU, a video benchmark like 3DMark will work well also. Also depending on your laptop vendor, they may have a downloadable utility disk where you may find a fan tester as part of an overall system health test.

If you suspect the fan, you may want to replace it anyway as repeated overheats can kill your CPU or some other component.
