laptop stays on

My laptop will not shut down it says on a blank screen shutting down with the little circle going round and round and never shuts down. Help. It would not start up just blank screen so I hit the power button and now this. I am on windows 8.1 but that never loaded and just blank scrren with shutting down message.

Just leave it on overnight. If it doesn't finish shutting down after that, hold down the power button for ~30 s. After that press power again (<1s) and see if you have damage.

Thanks for you answer I left it on and tried to run the battery down it did finally shut off after 5 hours by holding the on/off button, any idea as to why?
