Question Laptop stops working after being unplugged

Hello, I’m having a problem with a laptop.

It’s a Lenovo IdeaPad Model Y510P, quite old, maybe 8-9 years old.

The battery became bad very soon after it was bought (maybe after 2 years), so for the last years, it has been used without a battery (so only plugged in).

The problem started over a year ago. Suddenly, one day, it didn’t turn on. We thought it was dead, and used a desktop instead. But, about a week later or so, we tried to turn it on, just out of curiosity, and it booted up normally! Since it was working, we didn’t bother about researching more.

After that, the same thing happened again several times, every few weeks or so.

After a while, we understood that every time the laptop was unplugged, it stopped working, so during the last months we’ve tried to not unplug it.

For almost a year, it was never unplugged (although it has been turned off several times).

Now in summer, we travelled to another country for over a month, so we brought the laptop. After arriving, it didn’t turn on for a few days, but then functioned normally.

One day, the power cable was tripped on and was thus unplugged, while the computer was on.

Since then (it was several weeks ago), it hasn’t shown ANY signs of life (no lights, nothing).

We don’t think the power supply is the problem, but it’s still possible.

Does anyone know what the reason might be, and what to do? It’s an old laptop, so there might be no other option than to get a new one, but if anyone knows a fix, that would be great!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

it has been used without a battery (so only plugged in).
Source a genuine battery for the laptop, then perform a couple of power cycles(charge and discharge).

You might want to disassemble the laptop and inspect the power delivery are of the board for any blown componentry.

Hi , you can try disconnect bios battery, and unplug laptop , press power buton couple of times and keep press for 15 seconds , check bios battery to be ok ,voltage should be 3.3v , plug in laptop and try to power up if works , just go on Lenovo website and make bios update is very important , on this models if is no other damage on motherboard could be a bios issue , you can try and see if it will work or not .
