Ive never owned a laptop before.... period.

Given that info.... Im wondering what strategy you laptop owners use
to manage files with a laptop that will occasionally be hooked up to a
company network as well as in travel mode and NOT connected to LAN

Example... we have Exchange server here at work.... what should one do
so that all your emails are available both on the server....and on the
laptop when in travel mode? How to sync them? We have Exchange 5.5
but will be upgrading to Exchange 2000 very soon.

Also.... what abt other kinds of files...such as Word docs or
Powerpoint files?

We each get a folder of our own on the data server...... so do I keep
all my files there and then how do I sync them with laptop when in
travel mode?

Also.....do you guys use the My Documents folders in above scenarios?

Bottom line.....Im confused on how to "manage" a laptop so that my
files when connected to company server are available... but also
everything is available when Im traveling with laptop and disconnected
from company network.

Gentle advice for a newbie?

Thanks!

There are about as many ways of doing this as there is room
for all of the possible different scenarios. Some thoughts to
consider in developing a "road warrior's" strategy might depend
on factors such as: Who needs to see the files on the server,
i.e., just you or you and others? What type of connections are
going to be available when on the road, e.g., dial-up, high
speed internet, etc.? Is the company server set up for VPN
connections? And so on. Ask your co-workers.

And as for me, my laptop is just another remote computer and I
keep it current (or sync'd) to my personal desktop systems, each
of which mirrors each other.
