The cd,/dvd burner has stopped working on my Lenovo Ideapad 100 laptop so I've just bought an external cd/ dvd drive/burner. When I plug it into the laptop I hear the connect sound but nothing shows up on the taskbar that a new device has been found. When I tried to burn files to a CDR it was still trying to do this on the old integral burner so it's not identifying the new external. Can anyone help? Do I need to do something to enable the laptop to identify? Thanks.

I was a bit concerned it was broke after the postman pushed it through the letterbox and it dropped about three feet onto the floor. I thought he'd ring the bell and hand it to me! It was in a small box though and it's just worked okay on the disc I've just burned. The drop to the floor wont have shortened it's life will it?

I've managed to successfully burn some files onto a CDR with the new external drive I've bought. I'm trying to do the same with a dvd-r this time but I'm struggling. I did the CDR on window media but it says I can't do the dvd-r. I switched option from cd to dvd but it says file too big but it isn't too big actually. Ages ago I used the laptops own built in disc drive which doesn't work anymore. Can anyone recommend the best way to burn onto a dvd-r? Is there a free software I can use online? Has anyone used anything you had success with? Thanks.
