[citation][nom]amk-aka-phantom[/nom]Good point, bad example. You study for YOURSELF, not for grades.[/citation]

See, this is the problem our country has fallen in to (the US). We tell everyone "study anything your heart desires and be whatever you want" - but we don't tell people that if you borrow $80,000 or more to go to school and study "reproducing german art of the weimar republic" or "political science among single celled creatures native to the seychelles" there's no way you'll be able to make money with it or ever be able to pay off those loans. We've become focused on happiness of study and motivation (and "everyone should go to college" - when many shouldn't) over productivity.

Rant aside, I and most of my friends (gen y and younger) realized this and studied useful things like engineering, business, medicine and law. And we (mostly) all have good jobs and have repaid any loans we have. But, while we may have enjoyed some of the work, we still did 90% of the studying BECAUSE WE WANTED THE BEST JOBS and MOST INCOME, not because we enjoyed it. That's the point of this story - if you remove the incentive to stand out above the crowd, you bring the standouts back to the crowd, lowering the average. The former standouts won't continue to produce at a high level (in this case study) just for the good of the group if they know they are going to get the same grade. And researchers won't research extra hard and work long long hours and invest tons of money if they know at the end of the day they are going to make the median income whether they invent the next big thing or just product standard every day products.

Well, I feel sorry for you :) I prefer combining high income and doing something I enjoy. I refuse to work with something that isn't interesting for me... btw, poor US... you really need $80K to get decent education to get a good job? In my native country you need like $5K, and you earn about the same as in the US, and in India you need even less... Maybe it's about time your country starts thinking about what kind of education you're really getting for your money? Because I have American friends, and apparently most of American education can't match anything what you have in so-called "developing countries" knowledge-wise.

I personally do enjoy what I do - I just didn't enjoy all the classes I had to take to get there. And while I borrowed $0 (academic scholarships), some private schools cost $50k per year or more for undergrad - grad schools top that routinely. Some friends with about the same number/types of degrees as I have $300k in debt.

And i really highly doubt you earn as much :) Or had quite as good of an education, especially for $5k.

That's funny, since all you've done is tell people they basically have no right to collect money for doing something they enjoy :) Hypocrisy isn't a very endearing quality, my friend. Especially since you are now introducing hear-say into an attempt at a factual conversation. "My friends tell me this," blah blah blah...that's nice. So far, I've seen far better out of the American educational system then the Indian system in this discussion. And this is from someone out of either system :) My first and last comment to the troll.

[citation][nom]Just another slinger[/nom]I swear it takes fewer and fewer comments for a discussion to evolve into a crap slinging tournament with each passing moment.[/citation]
Successful troll is successful.

[citation][nom]alidan[/nom]don't think CPUs thinks solid-state drives, to make a 1 TB drive that about $200 would take about 10 nm.I already thought they used a type of laser for this, it seems very obvious[/citation]
That's why it's a good idea to patten an idea you have, but, imo, only when you have some drive or desire to see it be implemented. Too much patent trolling lately by too many companies.

Earning a living is part of being an adult. Sure we all want to do what we enjoy. If I could build custom computers and breed/raise tarantulas for a living I'd be happy as can be. Unfortunately it isn't feasible. So instead I work on fighter aircraft for the United States Air Force.

Furthermore, if the purpose and intent of the patent system eludes your comprehension perhaps your education isn't all that it was cracked up to be. Or maybe you have no education on the theory of the patent system and are speaking solely from your personal(limited) experience and opinion.

Regardless, I'm fairly certain I have been successfully trolled, so I won't be responding to anymore opinionated posts from you.

Of course I don't earn as much. However, where does your money go in America? Electric bills? Insurance? "Social security"? Taxes? Overpriced food? My money goes ONLY on things that entertain me and nothing more, there's barely anything I have to pay, everything is damn cheap. Phone bills? I have $16 on my phone. I don't know what to do with that money 🙁 I'll have to talk 24/7 to decrease that amount by a bit... it's less than 1 cent per minute and about 0.1 cent per SMS (government limits the amount of SMS per day at 200, though, too scared of Pakistan terrorists, ROFL). I could probably use 3G to spend some of that money, but last week my company deployed hot-spots all over the town and I can get Wi-Fi almost anywhere I want to... Electricity bills? Again, $15/month doesn't concern me. Insurance? Not needed. Taxes? Low. Medicine? A friend of mine came from US to India just to get some complex surgery. They demanded above $10K there; he did it for $1K here and medicine here is great if you know where to look.

I didn't even go to a university yet, I have the money needed (plan to study abroad, because I loathe Indian education system from the small bits of it I saw) but I decided to hold off for now and work - I've learned more about IT in the last half a year than anybody would teach me.. nothing teaches as good as practice and space for experimenting. I don't need it for a "degree", I don't really care about such things and neither do my employers, but certain things simply can't be taught here.

In Russia, universities are cheap and most of foreign education got NOTHING on them due to the remainders of an awesome Soviet education system - country SUCKED, but the education was solid; it's becoming worse now but when I finished school there, I was 3 years ahead of all my American and European friends and the trend goes on in higher education, too. Indian education system is just sick, because they make sure that you either learn the stuff or they torture you to death 😀 There's none of that campus hangout business, no parties or whatever goes in college, just studying, studying, studying... till you graduate or fall dead. Suicide rate because of bad grades is surprisingly high  No kidding. Local newspapers love to report that stuff...

1) No right to collect money for an idea, especially one that can be replicated by anyone with the right tools, full right to collect money for actual work required to implement it.

2) Hear-say? Read above. By the time American schooling system taught them about fractions and Pythagoras, I was dealing with advanced trigonometry (which is a pain in the ass, by the way, not very complex but SO boring).

For the nth time... I'm not trolling on Tom's Hardware, ever. Anything I say, I actually mean.

Surely it is, and I am earning a living. Part of my job is building PCs 😛 Mostly ultra-silent builds, but I still like it and once in a while I get a request for a gaming/workstation rig. I get paid for it, I enjoy it, everyone is happy. Problem?

BTW, what's with tarantulas? Just an odd example or you really like the damn things?

Nobody ever taught me about patent system, that's right, they don't care about that outside the US much :)

Opinionated posts? Of course they are. What, am I supposed to be expressing someone else's opinion instead of mine? This is comments section. Comments are your opinion on the subject.

And I repeat for the (n+1)th time, I'm not trolling on Tom's. Quit throwing a troll label on everyone whose opinion doesn't match yours.

Oh yeah, and nice job throwing a pathetic "you're a kid" insult again... I'm not ashamed of being young, it has its benefits :) Such as outliving people like you... And no, I refuse to phone my mother at this time just to say hello. It is highly immature, rude, disturbing and, admit it, quite a mean thing to do. I personally value my sleep and am ready to kill anyone who interrupts it  (Isn't everyone?)

Now, whoever is labeling me a communist... seriously? I loathe that garbage. I don't see why some drunkard pig should get the same rights as I do. inb4 hypocrisy accusations: I don't see, however, why this drunkard should be charged for using the same type of phone I have or copying my garden's style - analogy to patents :)

Patent system might be nice, but at this point it's ALL patent trolling. I wouldn't mind this laser tech being patented to make sure that researchers get their share, but will it be like that? No chance. It will be more and more patent trolling. Serious companies disregard moronic patents for a reason - who the hell would ever pay attention to a patent about the rounded icons? - and end up in pointless patent battles that go on for years and profit no one but the lawyers. You think Samsung gives a hell about Apple blocking them in Australia? They sold enough Tabs in Asia and now made themselves an awesome advertisement with the whole ordeal, and desperate Aussies are probably rushing to the stores as I write that... never mind, Christmas is over - they were rushing 😉 More serious patents can't be disregarded because of the weight of the companies holding them - try to mess with Intel, for example! However, when a smaller company holds an important patent, it easily gets crushed by the giants.

Have a good day - time to take a few arrows in the knee.

[citation][nom]amk-aka-Phantom[/nom]Good point, bad example. You study for YOURSELF, not for grades.[/citation]
but at the end of the day, almost everyone studies for money :)

[citation][nom]cmcghee358[/nom]At least someone understood the analogy. Thanks Paladin. Maybe I'll look you up on my next Tour to PyongTaek/Osan AB?[/citation]

I've been to the Songtan area earlier this year. Wasn't particularly impressed with the area, good for meeting juicys and fillipinas. I live and work out of the Daegu area with frequent trips to Seoul. I find Daegu / Busan to be a pretty good stomping ground.

[citation][nom]rebel1280[/nom]Above comment was not meant as disrespect to anyone's views or opinions, rather I actually really enjoyed reading every comment here![/citation]
Hey rebel, if it wasn't for the dense types like we're enjoying, atm, the world would be a boring place. I mean, they only come this slow once in a blue moon.

HAHA true....speaking of....mmm Blue Moon...

[citation][nom]amk-aka-phantom[/nom]I really don't care. Patents = slow-downs in technical progress. I'm a selfish bastard and don't care for anything but my benefit If their research was not for the benefit of the mankind but for money, they can go #@$! themselves, period.[/citation]
ya because that pays for your kid to go to MIT, because it pays for your student loans for going to MIT, because it pays for the bills like the heating and electric bill at MIT. this is why you can support yourself to invent this or other things in the first place right.
i want that air back that you are taking up space and using.
yet another reason why socialism and communism are a failure in mathematics and futility.
limited supply vs. ever increasing demand.
you want communism or socialism sign over every pay check you have ever gotten or will ever get to the IRS and rely on the government to provide everything you need and want.
ya i don't see anybody doing that right now and have rarely ever heard of any one doing that.

We refer to people like this as Oxygen thieves.

Well, that first sentence is flat out wrong. The shortest wavelength of light currently used in the industry is 193nm from a ArF excimer laser. Using 193nm light, Intel can still print 22nm logic gates, which have a relatively large spacing between them. In DRAM, the spacing between features is about the same as the size of the features themselves, the half-pitch is currently around 45nm, again using 193nm light.

The next shorter wavelength that will likely be used is 13.5nm, which is called EUV (extreme ultraviolet) despite being deep in the range of x-rays. However, there are a number of problems before it can be implemented such as air is opaque at this wavelength and there is no lens material for this wavelength, so extremely accurate reflected optics need to be designed and optimized.
