Hi there I have an AS rock 970 extreme 3 Mobo and an fx-6200 processor I was looking to upgrade my RAM so I was looking to get the (Kingston Technology XMP Beast Series 8GB 2133MHz) for gaming purposes I was looking for the latency timings so that I could get the best out of my RAM and I did manage to find it but I was a bit confused as to what it means as I'm a bit new to the memory side of computing. The latency timings that i found were only 3 numbers which are listed below

Each module kit has been tested to run at DDR3-2133 at a low
latency timing of 11-12-11 at 1.6V.(This is listed on the online pdf of the RAM module)

http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/?partid=khx21c11t3k2/8x

now I want to run this ram at its max stock speeds on my mobo but im not sure which settings I should apply and also I looked at other mem modules and they displayed latency timings such as 9-9-9-27 which are four numbers but this mem module that I looking at has only 3 numbers so if I do buy this then what should I set the 4th timings in BIOS to

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Solution
usually the 4th timing is either the sum of the first 3 or the sum of the first 3 minus 2 or 3. Doesn't matter, if you want the best performance that CPU can handle get a 1600 MHz kit with a CL of 7, the kits do exist and aren't that much more expensive. That cpu will be HIGHLY Unlikley to run any memory above 1600 MHz so you're better off getting the lowest possible timings on 1600 memory.

So basically your telling me even if I buy the RAM which is factory clocked at 2133 Mhz I wont be able to utilize these speeds ?

So what latency settings will I need to set in order to get these speeds or am i better of getting a slower module since you said the best speeds that I can get out of it is 1866Mhz

I need the higher speeds for gaming, Photoshop and video editing that's the only reason I was looking to get RAM at those high speeds and also with the latency settings do I only have to set 3 values and what about the fourth which is not being given in some of the product descriptions that I'm looking at.

Thanks a lot the link really helps so wt would u recommendation be as to the values that I set the values to in order to obtain the 1866Mhz speeds and also do I even need to bother looking at the Mobo memory support list I mean an DDR3 RAM module will work on a DDR3 supported mobo right?

Hi there aldrichfernandes99,

The AMD FX series microprocessors have native support for JEDEC compliant memory standards up to DDR3-2133. DDR3-2133 memory modules that use non-standard timings or voltage levels may or may not work.

The following module from Corsair conforms to the JEDEC DDR3-2133K specification

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233245

Note the 11-11-11 timings and 1.5 volt supply. These are in line with those specified by JEDEC's DDR3-2133K spec. A module running at 12-12-12 would be in line with JEDEC's DDR3-2133L spec.

The Kingston kit with 11-12-11 timings and 1.6 volt supply does not conform to the JEDEC DDR3-2133K specification. High performance non-standard modules are great, I use them myself; the same can be said about lower performance non-standard modules that are cheaper than standard modules. All of these can also be problematic as CPU and motherboard manufacturers typically design their memory controllers around JEDEC specifications. Testing and tweaking for a multitude of non-standard devices is performed afterwards. As such, it's a good idea to look at a motherboard's support list to see if a particular module is supported. The list is by no means exhaustive though, unlisted modules may very well work without issue and those that do prove to be problematic may be fixed with minor tweaking.

Any JEDEC compliant module should work in any motherboard that supports those standards. This is a problem for you because while your FX-6200 CPU supports DDR3-2133, your motherboard does not appear to do so.

For practical reasons I would limit the memory that you purchase to DDR3-1866. This standard is supported by your motherboard, and your motherboard should also support non-standard timings should you decide to go that route.

Furthermore, the difference between DDR3-1866 and DDR3-2133 is negligible. It's not worth the added effort for just gaming.

Thanks a lot I'll b looking 2 buy 1866 MHz module n if it doesn't reach those speeds on my mobo there's no problem with the 9-9-9-27 to get the speeds of 1600 MHz right?

Ok after doing some research I think I wanna buy this 1. Can I run this module at 1600Mhz if I want to n if i can what latency Timings do I need to set for it

Thanks Ill keep that in mind you've been of great help bro safe

If all that you want is DDR3-1600, I recommend this kit from Corsair

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CML8GX3M2A1600C9-Vengeance-Profile-Performance/dp/B00569K7LM/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1387306858&sr=1-6&keywords=corsair+vengeance+8gb

It's a little bit cheaper. Corsair Vengeance is one of the most reliable and most recommended brands on these forums.
