In the latest issue of mobilepc Gateway service and support ranks highest
(they pose as customers and give support one of three different "problems"
to solve, one problem per call). They rate the vendor on whether the problem
is solved and how quickly. Gateway was first ahead of Apple, Dell, etc. IBM
was very low.

I don't know how big the sample was, but Gateway first on any test like this
surprised me, and IBM doing badly surprised me more.

Maybe Gateway still has US tech support. Dell is in India. I have not called
Gateway in years (knock on wood) as all my computers are working fine (knock
again). I called Dell last year on my daughter's new laptop and spent an
hour talking to India (very nice and polite but useless), then was
disconnected. Called back and got premier support (which she gets with her
computer through school) and got a guy from Texas who fixed the problem in
about 90 seconds. This is no exaggeration. So how much did Dell save by
outsourcing their tech support to India when it takes over an hour on long
distance versus a minute locally? And who knows--if I didn't get that US guy
I might still be on the phone with India.
