Level 99 or BIG BUST!!

I'll take the BIG BUST.

Now that I got your attention. :)

I did some math and this is what I came up with.

I am sure someone else did some math too and perhaps my results differ
than theirs but big deal. All we really care about is the BIG BUST,
right?

Given the following:

A person

1) takes one hour in a multiplayer game to get from level 85 to 86
2) kills only monsters level 85
3) never dies
4) continues to play under the exact same conditions with the intention
of reaching level 99

That person will reach level 99 after playing for 6,782 hours.

This translates to roughly 282.6 days (24 hour days)

Possible conclusions:

1) A person cannot have a life and get a character to level 99 during
one ladder session
2) A character that makes it to level 99 has to be a shared character
that someone is playing constantly under the above conditions
3) A character that makes it to level 99 has to be played by some type
of bot program while not being played by an actual person
4) My math was wrong - well it seems right!

What you are talking about is assumptions, not math.

I assumed at players 8 that it took one hour to get from level 85 to
86.

If it takes 15 minutes then divide all my results by 4.
now it is 70 days (24 hours days) sounds reasonable but still need to
give up having a life

perhaps it takes 5 minutes to get from level 85 to 86. Can someone
clarify?
If it takes 5 minutes then it can be done in 23.55 days (24 hour days).
Now it is getting a little mroe reasonable.

I also used the two penalties

character level <-> monster level from equal to greater by ten - from
100% to 5%
the penalty for character level. The one I used had .0049% penalty at
level 98

I ignored things like experience shrines and an annihlus, that can help
make it faster

Three level 99 characters?
As Spock would say, "Fascinating"

I know that the game has changed a LOT in 1.10, but that doesn't seem right,
although I didn't bother to check the math. Back in 1.09, a bunch of us on
US-East Realm decided to try for a level 99 hardcore character each. I
lost mine at level 96, started a new one, and got to level 99 in just over
two weeks. Yes, I did play quite a lot during that time, but I do have a
full time job, so it for sure wasn't anywhere near that kind of hours.

With uber gear, and the right character, especially with a cooperative
group, I'd think it could still be done in a month or so of only moderate
playing?

Your math isn't right.
Did you calculate for 8 player games ?

There's at LEAST 1 person in the new
ladder season, who played THREE
chars up to LVL 99 (was mentioned on
several D2 sites at the beginning of this week)

I´ve read that it takes approximately 3500 8 player Baal runs to go from lvl
98 to lvl 99 without deaths. Something like 3000 runs for lvl 97 to 98.
Approximately 500 less runs each lvl from 97 till lvl 95. 91 to 94 gets alot
more exp per run than lvl 95 to 99. Anyone (including myself) can get a char
to lvl 90 in very little time and have a life with work and family on the
side.

Remember there is a large difference playing lvl 85 - 86 where you get like
95% exp and playing from lvl 95 to 99 where you only get 7% exp. See the exp
chart in www.diabloii.net under miscellaneous in the strategy compendium.

It definitely does not take me an hour of concentrated Baal runs to get from
85 to 86, but at lvl 86 things slow down visibly and at lvl 88 or 89 I give
up levelling further usually. As my patience with the average bnet kiddie at
that stage fails me utterly. I only have 2 lvl 90+ chars, but 30+ chars at
lvl 85+.

If your calculation is correct there shouldn´t be any lvl 99 chars on the
ladder right now, and there is for sure. And it only took something like
from july 8 2004 at reset untill end august 2004 to get the first lvl 99´s.
Thats less than 50 days of play, and with limited possibilities of twinking
because of the total reset. In 1.09 after a ladder reset where the new chars
shared realm with all the old chars, with copious amounts of twinking gear
and rusher chars, it only took like 38,7 hours to get to lvl 99
(http://www.diabloii.net/strategy/x-articles/ladder-dip-dancer.shtml).

Cheers

You're missing on another factor. With players 8 doing Baal runs, you
get the higher experience for the ones you kill and also you get a bit
of experience for the ones that your party kills. I haven't done it in
a while but I'm fairly sure that going from level 85 to 86 will take
much shorter than 15 minutes in a good party. You are correct though
that it will still take a lot of time to do it but not as long as you
thought it would.

Going from Zod's data plus my own set of assumptions.
98-99 = 3500 runs
97-98 = 3000
95-97 = 1000
91-95 = 200 x 4 = 800 (reasonable? I've never been that far to justify
this assumption)

One run takes on average 2 minutes, be on the pessimistic side and make
it 2.5 minutes. 8300 runs x 2.5 minutes = 345.83 hours = 44 days (8
hour days). Add an extra day for 1-91 to make it a total of 45 days
(some people can do 1-80 in less than 4 hours).

This also assumes one never eats rug. If you do, especially at level
98, the recovery time is quite large. Trust me, I know :)

I had to read that twice coming from you. Eating rug not munching :) Dirt

on ladder i have noticed that 99% of all lvl 99's are achieving such status
through use of a baal-bot. they let it run all day and night while they are
at work or out for the night, and it achieves lvl 99 in no time at all. it's
sad and unfair, but blizz seems not to care too much.

and they made us all feel better by saying the following stuff:

Perhaps all that is required is for some people to give up maths, and
take up playing Diablo 2.

Just my 1 + 1 cents.
