Doesn't have AMPS, does it?

I don't think amps is useful anymore. recently there was a digital tower
problem so my 4400 was in analog mode. totally useless. full signal but it
could not complete a call. later I called a tech and they said the analog
cannot handle a large load when the digital goes out. So the obvious
question is how useful is the amps mode going forward. I don't think the
can you here me now guy is using the analog mode.

The MUCH higher call capacity of digital is one of the big reasons
the wireless companies went to digital. Also, the amount of bandwidth
committed to AMPS is being decreased in favor of digital. So if the
digital equipment goes out, the few remaining AMPS channels will be VERY
quickly consumed. AMPS is on the way out, and be discontinued in a few
years (by the major providers like VZW, anyway).

If I had to guess logically, I would say late December, early January.
Reason being, it's VZW's first EV-DO capable phone. EV-DO won't be
launched nationally until 2005, so that's when I expect a national
launch. Most, if not all, phones will be EV-DO capable from there on
out.
