Hi all,

Im looking for a way to make a beam light effect. I have footage of traffic
at an intersection at night. I speed it up so the traffic is moving really
fast but Ive seen in movie how the lights of the cars seem to been together.
Its almost like a blur of light made from all the headlights. Does anyone
know how I can achieve this effect. Im using adobe Premiere 6 and after
effects 6.

Thanks in advance
Regards,
Andy

This is a lot easier to do when you are capturing the footage, just slow
down the shutter speed. Can you retake the footage or is it impossible?

Yeah the footage can be retaken no worries, but im affraid my camcorder
doesnt allow for a slower shutter speed. Thanks anyway.

Some cameras offer a low light color enhancement mode which gives a
slow shutter, even though the shutter select doesn't give you anything
slow enough. It is worth checking the manual for other shooting
options, see if some setting will give you a slower shutter. You
don't need a really long one to get light trails -- 1/15 second is OK
(video runs 1/60 normally -- in NTSC, PAL is 1/50 and slow would be
1/12). Some cameras can do even longer shutter speeds (again, this is
a good thing for still pics primarily, because ordinarily you don't
want to have light blurring; also, CCDs don't accumulate light exactly
like film so you can't do the same sort of extended exposure tricks).

Like Jeffery said, some camera can be tricked into doing our bidding
even if the controls are not accessible at first glance. For instance, I
was able to get a decent depth of field effect on a lowly TRV33 by
setting the camera optical zoom to the max and moving back from the
subject and screwing on a dark ND filter, thereby forcing the camera to
open the iris even though there is no manual iris control on that
camera. It's probably worth it to explore the camera manual with a
little creativity in mind.
Barring that, I would post the question on the Creative Cow Aftereffect
forum. They are a talented, creative and helpfull bunch.
