Bah. Just unify HD standards. Make 1080 the next standard for everything (it almost is). The more important thing is keeping character size the same. I sometimes run at 720 just because OSes still are crappy at supporting scaling of their apps and desktops. I want everything at the same size on my screen, just at 4x the pixels. Once we do that, let's just dump the idea of resolution...all OS and APPS just need to scale to a real-world physical size scale determined by the comfort of the user. If my 32" screen was running at 720, 1080, 2160, or 4320, the only thing I should notice is less jaggies.

Kind of a tough sell to your average user. I mean it requires more expensive hardware to run the more expensive screens and costs battery life in smaller devices and what's the payoff? "You see those *tiny* little dots comprising the screen that you can barely notice, if you can notice them at all? Yeah, you won't be able to notice them as easily with this new higher resolution screen." I don't see many people I know rushing out for this... Uh... Shall we call it a bargain?
