linux ip addressing

Im trying to setup a make shift custer computer useing some old computers i have laying around and installed linux on them but i cant get the ips assigned correctly. Help

get the diffenernt computers to work together with one main comupter controlling them
I have tried setting all ips using ifconfig witch didnt work as well as pushing ip out from my dncp server didnt work
