Check this out. I have a Hp desktop about a year old. I put a gig of ram in it and crap like that. It has a AMD athlon XP 2600+. I was curious to know if i could get a new motherboard and CPU and replace the one i have in the HP now.....keep in mind its an Hp...

Would help to know the HP model # and as many specs of the computer as possible...In fact a link to a product description would be downright nice!

Nearly all HP's use Micro ATX boards. A few use full ATX. And a few use full ATX cases with Micro ATX boards (yes, a smaller board does fit a larger case).

It's a Micro ATX version of the very well-liked Asus A7N8X. I'm not certain you can get a "much" better board, although you can probably get a more complete, newer version of the same board.

But you're also talking of a new CPU, so are you doing a socket change? Are you thinking of perhaps an Athlon 64?

You'd need to find a Micro ATX board for Socket 754 or Socket 939. Unfortunately there aren't many of those that use nVidia chipsets.
