Logitech Driving Force Pro on PC?

I'm trying to buy a steering wheel combo for a birthday present for someone.
I've read great things about the brand new Logitech Driving Force Pro for
XBOX, but I need one for the PC.

Since this wheel is USB, doesn't that mean it will be backward compatible as
a controller on the PC? I certainly don't want to buy it based on my
guesswork that since it's USB, it'll work...

Beats me. Even if it is a USB device, it needs approprite drivers to
work in Windows. Check the web.

I checked the web. A prominent gaming site said it would work on a PC
"since it's USB" but Logitech's site lists Xbox as a requirement.

Oh well,

I don't see what the Xbox would have that the PC couldn't support. Like
I said though, it's a matter of drivers. You really should investigate
some other hardware forums on the net for people's experiences.

Firslty : "backward compatible" is used to describe something that will
work with an older version of said device. A PC is not backwards
compatible with an XBox.

A USB port is simply a HW standard for connecting devices compatible
with the relevant devices HW & SW.

This wheel will not work with a PC unless they say it will : e.g
"Supported devices include Xbox, PC, ZX Spectrum" or whatever.

HW is HW, but it needs specific device drivers to interface that HW to
the underlying SW system : in this case drivers to convert the HW
signals into the necessary SW calls in direct x.

Hope this helps a little.

Hmm. I guess my posts about needing the correct drivers weren't specific
enough...

He just wanted to beat me up for using "backward compatible" -- I only
meant that I wouldn't expect all of its features to be supported, but
whatever.

You made a mistake and Mitty corrected it without insulting you at all.

He then gave his opinion and ended his reply with "Hope this helps a
little.".

If you think that's being beaten up - I wouldn't read any replies from
'Bateau' (for example).

And hopefully I corrected you in a way you understood. The fact that you
dont expect "all the features to be supported" indicates an
unreasonable, and incorrect, understanding on your part.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro is a PS2 wheel. It can be used on PC and
will be fully supported as soon as Logitech's gaming software version
4.60 comes out.

However the one thing that is absolutely certain is that IT WILL NOT
WORK on XBox.

For XBox Logitech makes another wheel called "Logitech® NASCAR®
Racing Wheel for Xbox®"
