So, my 7 year old Samsung Syncmaster has just given up the ghost, with a fault that seems pretty typical to that model.

Thought to myself I'd just buy a new one, and have just spent an hour researching and completely baffled by all the features that monitors come with these days.

I can only really spend £150 maximum, and was just about to buy this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/393375-acer-g246hlbbid-24-led-lcd-hdmi-monitor-um-fg6ee-b01

when I read yet another article about features I don't have a clue about and chickened out.

Basically, is the above a decent monitor for my system (GTX 970, 8GB ram, i5 4460) or is there something else I should be looking for that I'm missing because I'm a technology idiot.

I use my PC exclusively for gaming.

Thanks in advance for any advice or pointers as to what I should be looking for

The whole IPS is worse than TN for gaming argument is false... Ghosting is caused by the low refresh rates not response time. You likely won't see a difference between those two monitors. PLS is Samsung's version of IPS, and they're only beat by LG in terms of picture quality in the modern market. Going from TN to IPS is a dramatic difference already, buy the one you like the most in terms of aesthetics.
The colours/contrast/brightness will be bad on that monitor as it's TN not IPS.

Here's a list of IPS panels. Bear in mind their response time will be marginally slower than that of a TN, but I don't think it makes a difference unless you are a pro gamer, and the colour/picture quality benefits far outweigh this slight compromise.

Ideally you would take an 144Hz monitor with good color presets and contrast and motion blur reduction or g-sync. LG 24GM77 is one such monitor, it is not expensive for this kind of monitors and has excellent performance, despite its TN panel.

If you cannot afford it, see the below two IPS monitors with glossy grain free coating for clear and vibrant images.

can't find hp envy 23 on partpicker

If you care about visuals/picture quality/colour correction then yes, so much better. But if you're a hardcore gamer who's all about performance and making uber-super-snappy decisions when gaming, then you'd be suited to TN. It's a preference thing, I myself hate TN panels as I view the compromise in quality overshadows the marginal performance gains. Its up to you, research both :)

Try and research different vendors for better prices. For example, check here.

If you have to go cheaper though, the samsung monitors use pls panels, which has a bit lighter coating than the matte AH-IPS, so they have a bit clearer and more vibrant image than the matte AH-IPS. The S24D390HL has pretty good color presets and contrast, it is not as good as the dell and hp above but it is cheaper and better than the rest in its price range.

IPS is better than TN in every way except responce times and black depth (minor one). However, given that the recent IPS panels have great responce times too, you should always choose IPS panels over TN when available. I say available, because only monitors with TN panels and 144Hz exist, except one expensive 27' 1440p Acer, which combines 144Hz with an IPS panel.

Most manufacturers you've heard of will produce similar results, especially at that price range. I'd go for the cheapest you can find. Good luck :)

Hi Guys

So having narrowed it down, I'm either going to go for this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Iiyama-ProLite-XU2390HS-1-inch-...

or this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-S24D390HL-23-6-inch-Mon...

Can anyone help me make the final decision?

Good choice, the white bezels will also dramatically increase your percieved black depth. I was not aware that the E series had already come out.

I agree! The white bezels are actually pretty nice to have.
