Solution

If you have enough money, i5 8600k would be nice or ryzen 5 2600x. If you go with amd config, you will be able to upgrade cpu to ryzen 5 3600x or even 4600x( 3600x for sure, but amd didnt tell us much...
You need to change both mobo and cpu. Upgrading cpu on that socket is not worth, you will barely see any performance difference. If you want to go with intel, i5 8400 is minimum for that gpu. Mobo for that cpu need chipset z370-h370-b360-h310. On the other side, you can take ryzen 5 1600 but you will need to oc it. Mobo for that cpu need chipset: b350-x370-x470, it also support a320 but you cant oc with that mobo

If you upgrade the motherboard, you'll want to upgrade the CPU. It makes no sense to buy a new motherboard to support an older architecture. I don't think your CPU is all that bad, any particular reason you feel it needs upgraded?

Add more ram and an SSD, you'll see a bigger improvement in overall performance with that.

He doesnt have to upgrade ram yet. Im rocking r5 1600 with 2x4 hyperx predator 3000mhz kit and ram usage is never above 6gb even in battlefield 1. Same goes for witcher 3, fortnite, ac origins. And I agree with upgrading ssd, that is definitely neccesery.
Edit: Forgot to write, he must upgrade his cpu, 8320 is bottleneck even for rx 570/ 1060 3gb....imagine for 1070.....

you mention the minimums but what would you recomend for cpu, mobo? keeping in mind future upgrades to ram, ssd ect

Now, it is on you to choose between amd and intel. Personally, i built pc for myself recently and i went with r5 1600 instead of i5 8400 just because of socket.

I lean towards Intel, haven't had an AMD chip since a 700MHz thunderbird (which my buddy tried to OC and melted it). But I've heard a lot of hype about the Ryzen cpus, I'd have to research before definitively stating which to get. For most, I don't think it matters much these days. I just built a new system last year, mini-itx with a 7700k.

Determine your CPU first, then find a compatible motherboard.
