I don't have much experience building PCs but I'd like to give it a go. I'm afraid if I go to a local PC builder I'm likely to pay too much and off-the-shelf machines don't have what I want. Below is an overview of what I've got now and what I want to build - hopefully I can find some guidance to help me get the right components and verify compatibility. Pls pardon me if this is too general for this forum...
I currently have 2 PCs that I'd like to upgrade; recycling as much as I can. I'd like one of them to be a high-end workstation for 3D and video. Right now my main machine is a 4770K in MSI Z87-G45mobo w/16G RAM, 256G SSD, GTX760, 800w PS, Win8.1Pro. Second machine is a i7 920 in Asus P6T-SE mobo w 12G RAM, 128G SSD, GTX760, 650w PS, Win7Pro.
For my new build I'm thinking:
-Recycle my current tower case and 800w PS.
-For a mobo and CPU I'm not sure, I think I want 6 or 8 cores because I often use a CPU renderer that will use them. Probably want Skylake but if other is better value I'm game.
-2X 950 Pros in RAID0 for system drive (would love to get 8G/s IO)
-GTX1080 (maybe 2?)
-64G RAM (maybe 128G?... would like to experiment with RAM Drive)
I'm willing to spend the money but I don't need the absolute bleeding edge, be it Xeon or Skylake.
For the second machine, I'm thinking I can retire the i7 920 and continue to use the 4770K but I'd like to get a 950 Pro SSD to boot from - not sure if I can do that on a Z87-G45 motherboard - I've seen conflicting reports. If anyone has any experience getting a 950 Pro to boot with the Z87-G45 mobo I'd love to hear about it because I'd like to avoid having to buy 2 new mobos.
What I'm after is a couple things; 1. a website where I can determine pros/cons for different MOBO/CPU/SystemDisk setups. 2. a "configurator" website where I can plug-in different component options to see if they will work together.
Any help is much appreciated!
