well, watts aren't the important thing here, the amps are. The one you want to look at is the amps on the +12v rail that's on the power supply(aka psu). Most of the power hungry items draw from this rail. Your psu should have 16amps on the +12v rail, check the sticker on it to be sure.

Nice pick! :bounce:

Good luck with it, I'm sure its fine.

well here' a quote from someone from newegg's reviews on that product:

Pros: It works on DELL VOSTRO 200's 250W power.

I need a SATA->molex converter to plug in 6pin power connector of this card, but it works.

I suppose it is nice time to add SATA->6pin(8pin) converter in addition to molex->6pin(8pin).

Cons: Card's fan is close to PCI-e connector, and I can not insert the card fully (.05 inch or less floating).

now, wonder where i could get that wire for myself...hehe

what I find interesting is that...newegg doesn't list the watt requirement, but reviews said that it says 400w on box, best buy selling the same one says it's 300, and the galaxy site itself says min. 350watts...numbers don't match at all...

The low profile aglaxy card I bought says 400W on the box. In the user manual, a website was listed that had a low-power version of the card that said 350W.

I think I'm gonna to install it tomorrow (as in tomorrow night, not in a few hours). I'm having my friend come over to hang out, he's great with computers, not with video cards and power supplies but at least I'll have a second opinion and a helping hand.

Until then. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I went to my local best buy to check out the 9600gt by galaxy...they failed...the front of the box had a sticker on it saying min requirement 350 watt low power/low profile...while the back said min. 400 watt. The website best buy had said it required a min. of 300 watts too...

The galaxy website has two diff low profile 9600gt's, one requiring 350 watt and the other 400, the only difference between them would be 500mhz in clock...

I went ahead and installed my card today. Took apart the case and put in the card. A little longer in length than my old one but it fit just fine. First time I booted it up, my monitor didn't have any display. When I went back in to take a look, I realized I didn't plug the extra output from my power supply to my video card for the extra power needed. Seems that the instructions in the manual weren't clear with that, but I figured it out.

Got it to work on the second try, installed the drivers, and opted to not overclock (unless I get a better power supply that is). Tested out Fallout 3 on max graphics and it was a bit choppy but it looked amazing. Then I tried out max graphics on CSS and it was the same deal, looked great and only somewhat choppy (40 fps avg).

The fan really isn't that much louder than it was with my old card, so really I have nothing to complain about unless it just stops working. Graphics on all my games can be run smoothly at close to maximum settings and resolution.

Overall great buy. Thanks for the help anyone!

Actually...

All is not well, me and my friend kinda rushed the installation and I'm not sure if I uninstalled all the old drivers and installed the new ones correctly. I noticed that because no matter how much I lower my graphic settings in-game, the framerate and smoothness stays the same as it was at max settings, choppy and laggy.

I'm going to go back and check everything now, I'm sure I can get it working with just a little more time.

Wish me luck.

Yeah still no luck. I've tried lower the settings in the nvidia control panel, tried everything from low to max settings, changed direct X levels, but no matter what settings I use I get around the same mediocre fps 40-50. It even drops to around 20-30 sometimes peaks just over 100 only if I stare into a corner of the wall.

I would say it's a bottleneck issue with my CPU but that can't be possible. My windows index rating jumped from 3.5 (javascript:%20validform(this);limited by graphics card) to 4.8 (limited by CPU).

With my old Radeon X1300 128MB, my fps was around 100 constant for HL2 games, on med-low graphic settings. When I used to raise my settings with the old card, the fps would drop until it was unplayable. Since my graphics card with the limiting factor before and I upgrade, how could my CPU be making my fps lower on a better card??

Something like a AMD Athlon 5400 would work fine, if you wanted to upgrade. I found that the C521 didn't support CPUs with multiplyers that have .5, so the AMD 5200+ would only give me 2.6GHz instead of 2.7GHz.

anyways this was my reply from galaxy:

We're really sorry the frustration we have casued. We have infact two 9600GT Low Profile cards. The normal one runs at 650/900MHz, has a TDP of 96W, and requires a minium of 400W power supply PLUS a 6-pin PCI-E power connector. The one you saw at Best Buy is a Low Power version, has a lower clock which is 600/900MHz, do not require a 6-pin PCI-E connector, and has a max. TDP of 59W.

To make sure you've bought the low power one, just look for the Low Power 350W sticker on the box.

About the requirment issue, according to early NVIDIA spec, the low power part requires a minimum of 350W power supply, this is what our label on the box states. However NVIDIA later on decided to lower the requirment to 300W, however we decided to keep the 350W rating label, just in case some users got cheappy 300W power supply, which can casue problem with our card.. The 400W on the back refers to old 6-pin powered version, you could ignore that.

Back to the problem, I believe if your 250W power supply is a good one (from big manufacturer) with good +12V rail, you can give it a run, but I can not garentee you can run the card with 100% stability. Afterall, it depends on the quality of your power supply, and the power consumption of other components in your system.

well the problem is, does new egg's galaxy have the sticker saying 350watt meaning it's low power so it'll work with ours, if not, the only place that I know that sells it would be best buy, for the extra $$...
