Hello guys,
With the new GPU's coming out soon I will most likely be upgrading to a 1080 as long as the benchmarks all check out.

Current Rig
GPU - GigaByte G1 Gaming GTX 970
CPU - AMD FX 8350
MoBo - ASUS Sabertooth 990FX
RAM - 16GB 1866 DDR3
PSU - Corsair RM 1000

AOC G2460P -> Downsampling 1440p

So yeah, looking at my rig my weakest part has got to be my 8350?
I'm going to be upgrading to a 1080 in the coming months to get ready for VR which I plan on getting December time or early next year hopefully there will be some awesome games out by then ;')

I also wanna get a new CPU, the thing is though, my love for AMD is gone and I will be switching to Intel.
But then at the same time I may aswell just switch to DDR4, I can get 16GB DDR4 for like £60.

Basically I'm looking for some help finding a DDR4 compatible MoBo and a good Intel CPU.

I'm currently running a CM Hyper 212 evo, so if that's compatible with the suggestions that would save me some money.
As for my case, I have the Cooler Master Storm Stryker so any size is gonna fit in there 😀

Later down that line I will also be looking at either 1440p or 4k monitor, but right now that's not a priority.

On a side note, how much would getting a dedicated Sound Card impact gaming, is it worth it at all?

Cheers in advance

Your weakest part is the FX 8350.

If you are only going to game, switch the i7 6700K to a i5 6600K as the gaming performance is near identical.

You're right that the FX CPU is the weakest point. But I don't see the need for a 6700k just to game. I'm a believer that it's more beneficial to OC your GPU rather than the CPU.

I didn't include a GPU because PCPartPicker doesn't have the 1xxx series available for selection yet.

Don't wanna go against the wind but curious why the love loss with AMD? I admit, I'm an Intel/Nvidia fanboy but I know people who've made AMD work, especially the CPU's(GPU's tend to be a bit trickier). Near as I can tell your weakest points are CPU(upgrade to a 9590 if you can get a good price and can easily change your cpu's) and GPU(I have 2 of the same in SLI and most of 2015-2016 give em a workout at 1080/ultra or 4k-barely 30-50fps). DDR3 is getting cheaper too. You're already at 1866 but if there's a much better latency than what you have that could be a closer match to some lower speeds DDR4. BTW wait for either the Xtreme Gigabyte 1080/EVGA SC or TI's for that big boost on the Pascal's. The reference/founders will leave you wanting in <2 years if you 4k/60fps/ultra.

They are simply outdated and no longer relevant.

The FX 9590 is...
1. Very hot, so you need an expensive cooler and you can not overclock it as much since it is near the limit of the FX series.
2. High power consumption, you need a good quality PSU and slightly higher wattage.
3. The performance is simply not up to par with skylake.
4. There are only a handfull of motherboards that can support a FX 9000 series.

Although I totally agree about the power consumption and OC cooling needs:
1. According to MOBO specs, his current one supports it.
2. Current PSU 1000w: CPU 220w + 1080(any currently known 350-550)= max 770 assuming the rig is running at max power for every task.
3. Shouldn't have to OC that CPU, it's already fast as is, 8 cores 4.7/5.0 ghz stock. If he wants to win a F1 race with best gas mileage sure SKYLAKE is great but the GPU is still doing the most work for gaming. I'm just not sure about the price a new one can be found and whether not the MOBO is in good enough shape to allow a simple swap.
4. Price: Those pcpartpicker prices are great but once you factor in the GPU upgrade(any known 1080 model) you're looking upwards of $1200-1400 for all.

I was only looking at CPU / MoBo I have everything else and i'm settled on the 1080 :)
I will most likely wait around until GigaByte's 1080, I'm a massive fan of them :)

As for sticking with AMD, no thanks. The 8350 isn't a true 8 core and after being mislead I will stay away them. Plus from my experience the 2 AMD CPU's i've owned have been terrible at high-res rendering (it's only a hobby, the main goal is gaming). But as mentioned my PSU can pretty much handle anything I throw at it for a while.

I'll do some more looking into the i5-6600k and the i7-6700k.
Thanks all :)
