Hi Guys,

having a lot of trouble trying to install an m.2 nvme ssd, so I currently have it cloned so windows is installed and everything and it shows up as a drive in my file explorer, but I cannot boot into it? It says (windows boot manager) before both my old hdd and new ssd, but every time I try boot into it I get either a inaccessible boot device error or reboot and select proper device?

I followed all the instructions for trying to boot of an m.2 on youtube videos and google but can’t seem to get it working so any help is great!

my full specs are

i9-9900k
Gtx 1050ti
Msi b365m pro vdh
16gm ram
2 hdd
1 m.2 intel 256gb ssd (this is the one im trying to install)

Hope someone can help please

Thanks in advance

Solution
and yes, been wanting to fully reinstall new os and drivers for a few months and now have a reason to :)
OK, then....do that instead of the clone operation.

At the end of the clone process, the first thing you MUST do is power OFF, disconnect all other drives, and power UP with only the new drive connected.
This is not optional.

Redo the clone operation.

-----------------------------
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
If you are cloning from a SATA drive to PCIe/NVMe, install the relevant driver for this new NVMe/PCIe drive.
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive

If you are going from a smaller drive to a larger, by default, the target partition size will be the same as the Source. You probably don't want that
You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned Partition Properties", and you can specifiy the resulting partition size, to even include the whole thing

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

After you clone HDD to SSD, first boot from cloned drive must be with old drive disconnected. This step is essential and can not be ignored.
If you fail to do this, then you have to redo cloning.

Please show screenshot from Disk Management.

ok yes I missed the step with having only c and the ssd installed will redo everything and keep you updated

what do I do if my ssd is smaller than my hdd? can I chose to just install windows and games on there? my hdd is at 300gb and my ssd is only 256gb

The total size of the drives is no problem.
What counts is how much data is on it.

How much space is consumed on your HDD? For that SSD, the actual consumed space MUST be below 200GB.

Read and follow the steps above.

ok great! also with the samsung magician where am I meant to be going for the partitions part? I have currently only my c drive and ssd installed as well

OK...so Disk 0 is a 500GB HDD?
Disk 2 is the new Samsung?

It appears that there is ~100GB consumed on the current HDD?
ok so, I havent re-cloned the device so it still has all the files on from when I cloned it, but im stuck cause on my hdd its 367gb but my ssd is only 256gb can this be worked around as its full of stuff I cant uninstall

and the size of the hdd is 2.7tb

🙁

3TB HDD, with approx 367GB consumed
Samsung SSD, of 256GB.

This cannot work. At all.
There is no magic to squeeze 367GB of data into a 256GB drive.

SDM may allow you to leave off certain folders, containing stuff like Video/Music.
But OS and applications cannot be split.
