Is there any speed differences between a sata m.2 ssd and a normal ssd? This might be a dumb question to ask but I’m pretty confused to what the difference is between the two. I was looking for which one to buy and got confused between a WD Blue M.2 Sata 6Gb/s SSD and a normal SanDisk Plus.

Which motherboard/system type do you have ?
Except for obvious M.2 or SATA type connection there's possible speed difference, If M.2 is NVME (PCIe x4)which is faster.
M.2 can also be of PCIe x2 type which has same speed as SATA SSDs.

i’m planning to get a b450 mortar max. The M.2 I stated in here was SATA so does it mean it has the same speed as with normal ssds?
 
It's not that simple, faster drive is, less resources it takes from system and then there are also things like virtual memory and antivirus as well as indexing that always run in background, things like that finish faster leaving more resources to rest of system with less interruptions.
