Question M.2 USB adapter types

I have a SKhynix SC311 SATA M.2 type SDD. I would like to use it for portable storage. The device has two notches B and M in the connector.

I also have a generic USB adapter that claims to support both M and B+M SATA drives. To do that, the blocking finger in the USB adapter in the B position is missing and replaced with contacts. Preferring to err on the side of caution, is using the adapter going to cause any damage to the drive?

Internet searching did not turn up any information one way or the other, so maybe I am being over cautious but would like to be sure. I hate the price of failure!

Thank you!
